First I would like to say that I agree with Tom. My wife is considering the surgery, and has decided to get all the nutritionist and diet help she can get before they talk about setting the date. She goes back and forth on the issue, and I think that if you are still on the fence, you need more time to research, ask questions, and evaluate your diets. I lost over 100lbs. in preparation for my surgery, the thing is, I know from all my past experiences that I won't be able to keep it off unless I have the tool to help. Most important is that this is your decision, your body, and your choice. This is about you, so don't let anyone else make your decision for you, even us.
Good luck and keep asking questions!

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate it. I've decided ATM, to just lose the weight on my own. With all the hoops I gotta jump through to get this thing, it's probably easier if I just do it on my own anyway. Thanks though to all.

I think if you don't have your heart in it, its not for you. I've heard of stories the struggles people go thru to get approved, its not easy...but worth it. I for one will continue to jump whatever hoops or obstacles I must until I get the outcome I want. Best of luck!!

I'd like to think that if I'd really tried, I could have done it on my own.
I'm the worlds best dieter - my problem is that for the past 30 years, I have either been on a diet or off a diet. I never knew how to do the bit in the middle.
So! For half a year I'd do well on the diet and lose 40-60lb. And the other half of the year, I put 50-70lb back on.
For me (at my age and with my track record of yoyo dieting), gastric bypass gave me the tool I needed.

Hi Ray-
Welcome to the forum... I too am pretty new! I'm 24 years old, and I having my surgery TOMORROW!!!
I will tell that it took me 3 years to actually decide to have surgery. I've been trying to lose weight since i was 12 years old- 3 tries at Jenny Craig, 2 tries at Weight Watchers, 2 tries at the Atkins diet, 1 try at South Beach, and probably 5 tries at the good ole' "working out and eating right" diet. I've always "carried my weight well" but it didn't change the number on the scale. After 12 years of trying, it's just seemed to become impossible, and my health is already starting to come into play- I have high blood pressure, adult onset asthma, pain in my joints, and I can't get up a flight of stairs without feeling like I'm going to die. It basically took feeling like shit everyday of life for me to finally stand up and say that it's time to make a change.
Now, of course the surgery is entirely up to you... maybe start doing research and keeping up with the forum while you lose weight on your own??? For me to decide, it took 3 years of daily debating inside my head, 1 year of therapy (1-2 times a week) and 2 years of seeing my doctor (every 4 weeks) to truly determine that this was the right way to go.
You have to find your own "right time and right place." It's different for everyone. You will make the BEST decision that is BEST for you- whether it's surgery or losing it on your own.
Good luck to you!!!

Hello! I am also somewhat new here. I have been in the process of JUMPING THROUGH THE HOOPS for 6+ months now. I finally have a surgery date of 11/10/08, however I am waiting for my final insurance letter approval.
My personal oppinion is get it done! I also have tried losing weight over the years it has been a struggle. My biggest sucess was on WW in which I lost a measly 29 pounds, it took me 16 LONG weeks. One year later I quit WW joined a gym and worked with a PT. After 12 months of working with a PT and spending 3 hours a day at the gym, I lost a few inches. I saw a few beacuse what is 2 inches here and 2 inches there when I had so many more to lose. I grew even more frustrated and ended up gaining back the weight plus 30 pounds when I had my son.
Looking back now, I wish that I would have had the surgery sooner. My pregnancy would have been better, my heath would have been better, my knees would be in better shape now.
I know so many people who would love (and need!) to have surgery, but can not get it covered by insurance. You have the coverage now, and down the road who will know what will change. Jobs, kids, etc. At that point in time you may not have coverage. SO I say start the process and go through jumping hoops. Try losing the weight while you are in the process and see how sucessful you are. You can always cancel your surgery at any time. You can not however guarantee that your insurance will cover the surgery next year.
We are all here for you, and I wish you the best of luck with your decision. :O)
