Default Pain med after RNY? Advice please.

Hi all,

Just looking for some advice on what pain meds I can take regularly after RNY. I know its no NSAIDs. I have Fibromyalgia and need to take regular pain meds to function daily! I am in the process of weaning off Pregabalin (lyrica) as it made me sleepy and I have to work/drive, but was great on my pain. I am also taking Co-codamol 30/150 for pain. Can I take them after my RNY? If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, it would be appreciated.

Take care,

Kel xxx

(seeing my doc on Monday, for his advice too!)

Not sure about the meds you posted above, but I know that Percocet is okay post-op.

I tpo have fibromyalgia, but I take Tramadol at night to help me sleep. For some reason my fibro has been a little "rough" on my lately so my doctor told me to add a Tylenol PM and it has helped me tremendously!

But check with your doctor...and good luck!

Kel, the Co-codamol is a combination drug of tylenol and codeine. I looked it up and it appears to be a lot like the Vicodan that many of us take for pain after surgery. It isn't an NSAIDs so you will be fine with that.

The Pregabalin is much like Neurontin and it isn't an NSAIDs either. I know that there are many people who are on that post RNY for Fibromyalgia so except for the tiredness it gives you, that also is a drug you can take after surgery.

I don't have Fibromyalgia but have taken both Vicodan and Ultram (Tramadol) for pain.

Default I'm far out but have a list

I don't know if it makes a difference, but due to my own permanent pain issues, I've had to take many pain meds. Here's what's been prescribed, and I've either taken them and stayed with them or gone off them due to side effects. Pretty sure side effects are non WLS related.

Soma (carisoprodol) (for spasms)
Vicodin 7.5 and 10 ES
Norco
oxycodone
oxcontin
klonopin (spasms)
valium (spasms)
trigger point injections with lidocaine, marcaine and steroids-no prob (don't have more than three steroids a year-or get doc that knows what the hell they're doing if you DO get more than three a year)
fentanyl pain patch (the BEST for long term relief without needing narcs for breakthrough
gababentin (sleepy-time - no go)
4x stronger gabapentin ( no way dude)
lyrica (doc wants to give it I say no)
Some morphine thing that starts with an "A" and it made me dizzy in three days so I quit. Doc wanted me to keep trying morphine and I said no.

There have been others, but these are the long-term ones.

It IS possible to find pain relief for conditions you have post WLS. Always ask the doc how big the pill is. Find out if you can cut it. There's a controversy about breaking long acting drugs. I did it and had no liver function issues. I'm almost six years out and have had no uclers or WLS related health issues. Except the pain meds and stress from pain made me loose weight.

I hope you find relief. My heart goes out to you. FM is a bitch to treat.

Elavil and amitriptyline were drugs they tried years ago pre-op for me but they gave me LSD tracers. No bueno.

I'm on amitriptyline and oxycontin now and feel better than I have in a long time. It's not perfect by any means, but I'm not having panic attacks over the daily struggle anymore. I hte how anitriptyline knocks me out but forced 10 hour sleep is better than no sleep I guess. I have fibromyalgia as well.

Thank you!!

Thanks for all your help. I'm seeing my GP tomorrow, so will ask his advice and mention some of the drugs you have mentioned. The Lyrica (pregabalin) is great for the Fibromyalgia I found, but as I said earlier weaning off because I have to work/drive. I too take Amitryptaline at night to help me sleep..does nothing for pain tho. Glad I can take the co-codamol after WLS at least!

Once again thank you for all the advice, hopefully I will get my meds sorted!

Have a great day people....raining here in Germany

Love Kel xxxx

Losing weight actually helps a lot of people out with their fibromyalgia, so you may be pleasantly surprised.

This isn't a actual pain pill, but some people take muscle relaxers for fibromyalgia. My fibro was really bad a few years ago, and taking a small dose of a muscle relaxer at bedtime gave me lots of relief.
