Pre-op Diet Question
Hi everyone,
I'm new here and thinking about Gastric bypass and narrowed down the Dr. I am interested in possibly doing this surgery. I am going to a Seminar next month to get more information.
My question is about the pre-op diet, looking at my potential surgeon's website, for 2 weeks (pre-op) I will be limited to a 1200 calories a day, low fat diet to shrink the liver. The only mention of having liquids only is for after 3pm the day before the surgery. Is this unusual not to be on a liquid diet for weeks prior to the surgery? I'm sure I will find out more information at the Seminar but I wanted to ask those who have had other drs. (this one is in NJ).
Thanks!

Nope, it is not unusual. It actually seems to me that every single surgeon has their own, unique requirements for the preparation they require before surgery. Some require weeks of liquids, some require a few days of liquids, some just have low-calories diets, some surgeons have no diets required. For my surgeon, I had no specific required pre-op diet at all -- except I had to lose 10% of my body weight and keep it off. Then, the day before surgery I was only allowed clear liquids and did a bowel prep drink.
I'm sure you're going to be fine!

Hi! I'm also in central Jersey. I just wanted to let you know that my surgeons are the top in the country. Check them out before you settle on one. Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons With them, I only had to do a liquid diet one day before surgery!

No, it isn't really unusual. I didn't have to be on liquid only. My pre-op diet consisted of using a bariatric product that was low calorie, low fat, low carb and high protein. I was on about 800 calories/day. I was allowed to eat protein bars, soy nuts, protein wafers, protein drinks, etc.
The things that will usually decrease the liver size are eating very low fat, low calorie, low carb and high protein foods.

Hi, nice to meet you, do you want to say where in Central NJ you live? I checked out your dr (advanced laparoscopic surgeons) and they have a really nice website, I called them the other day and unfortunately, they don't take my insurance, Aetna, they are Out of Network and I have absolutely no Out of Network coverage.
What about njbariatriccenter.com? know anything about them? That is who I am going to meet with at their next Seminar in August.

I live in Middlesex County. Too bad they don't take your insurance. And, sorry, I don't know anything about the NJbariatric center.
