pre-op liquid diet
Why do some people have to be on it for 2 weeks, others just 1 week or some just 2 days? What determines this?

It is totally doctor's preference. Doctor's find what seems to work best for them and stick with it. You will find especially in regards to the food plans that there is quite the variance. For yourself though just make sure you follow your doctor's recommendations.

I was required to lose about 10% of body weight (not excess weight) before they would schedule surgery, but I had NO pre-op diet right before surgery (no liquid diet, no fasting).
I think the 1-2 week pre-op diet must be psychologically very difficult. My diet was overall stricter (took a lot longer, etc.), but I was able to have a few "last suppers".

I'm freaking out!
This part is totally freaking me out!
I've tried liquid diets before - I've never lasted a DAY! I get too hungry (which is WHY I'M DOING THE SURGERY IN THE FIRST PLACE). How they hell am I supposed to eat no food for 2 weeks?
I personally hadn't heard about this before I joined this group - no one along my path has mentioned it to me before. My Nut only said it was possible that my doctor might put me on an extremely low carb diet or make me stop taking things like aspirin for a couple weeks before surgery.
It's so weird hearing all this here. I haven't heard this pre-surg strictness, but my post-surgery diet has been spelled out a lot stricter than some of what I've read here. Clear liquids for a week. Non-clear liquids (mostly protein shakes) for at least A MONTH after that, then slowly add things like fat free plain yogurt and stuff.
I have to say, if I'm supposed to go on a liquid diet before my surgery, I'm doomed. Because there is NO WAY. If I could live with being that hungry, I wouldn't be this fat!

Every Doctor seems to have something different that they require. Don't panic yet....although I am worried about following this liquid diet myself.... I keep thinking positive....I CAN DO THIS!! I HAVE TO DO THIS!!

I think the "have to do this" is what will make me stick with it. Although, my question to myself would be...if I can stick with two weeks on a liquid diet, why the heck can't I say no the to candy bar, cookies, and crap that's made me this size. Odd, isn't it?

Puddin I completely agree with you.....If I was able to say no to all the fast food before I wouldn't be in this situation, so what is going to keep me on the liquid diet. I have been on it for 3 days now and I was suppose to be on it for 3 weeks before my surgery so I only had 18 days left as of today but I get a call from my doctor's saying they pushed back the surgery 2 days so today is really my start date so the last two days didn't matter and ya I know two days isn't alot but when you are on the liquid diet one day feels like forever. Everyday seems to be this huge battle and I can't believe that I have to start over from day one and now I have 20 days left......

Well, I honestly can't see the purpose in the thing. Maybe a couple days, to clear out the intestines. If they want you to drop weight before the surgery, why in such a dramatic way - why not take more time? And the idea that it shows you have the committment to stick with the liquid diet AFTER surgery is just dumb. It's apples and oranges! Sticking with a strict diet when you're just fighting desire and head hunger is not the same as denying yourself solid food when you're STARVING!
GOD I hope my surgeon doesn't try to do this to me, because, short of heavy sedation, I honestly think it will be a deal buster. OK, yes, I have actual psychological issues with fear of hunger - which I have worked on to the point where I've really cut back on my anticipatory eating. But throwing me off the deep end into actually being extremely hungry all the time? It will not end well.
