the six month diet
hey everyone,
well, I have to start my 6 month diet with a nutritionist in a couple of weeks. I really dread it because of past experiences with diets (lost 50 on the last one but gained back 70!)
What I am wondering is: if I lose enough weight during the 6 months to get below 40 Bmi, and I have no co-morbids, will they still do the surgery?
I would have to lose around 30 lbs, which is totally possible, I'm good at diets! But not good at sticking to it after a few months.
So this seems like a double-edged sword to me. I want to loose a little and get healthier to be able to heal better from surgery, also to get used to eating less, however, I don't want to not be eligible for the surgery because I lost too much weight, I know I will gain it back.
I guess these are questions for the doc, but I was wondering if any of you had a problem with losing too much before surgery and getting denied because of it?
thanks!
Lori

I was worried about that same thing! But my BMI was JUST at 40. I was so afraid I'd have to go on a preop diet. So, here's my advice to you...if you have no comorbities (high BP, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or sleep apnea) you need to stay at 40+ BMI. Because remember, this is just a way for insurance companies to stall. You don't have to lose any weight in 6 months, as long as you give it a try. I wouldn't do that, though. If I were you I'd lose just enough so that I'd still be eligible for surgery. You don't want to mess that up! Good luck!

Thanks Nicole, I'm thinking the same thing. I don't have an appointment with the nutritionist for two more weeks, and there is part of me (believe me, the rebellious part) that wants to just go crazy eating everything right now before I start! But I know that's just not productive really! I hate having to wait 6 months, if it were up to me I'd get the surgery done tomorrow so I could start my journey, but I guess anything worth having is worth working hard for and worth the wait.

My Nut told me that they like us to lose 10% of the weight we need to lose overall. I did about that, but then fell and hurt my knee and ended up gaining most of that back, but she still signed off on me.
Actually, when I went back to the gate-keeper/endocrinologist I weighed 3 pounds MORE than I did when I first saw him 11 months earlier. But he still signed off on the surgery.

hmmmm
Anybody know what dictates whether or not you have to do the 6 months diet? I would be in the SAME boat since I am JUST at 40 BMI, on a good day after chugging a TON of water, lol.
And I'm SO impatient, lol.
If I have records of supervised dieting from about a year ago do you think that will qualify?
Do all insurers require this information?

It all depends on your insurance company. My old insurance was Oxford and they didn't require it. That's why I HAD to have my surgery in June b/c as of July 1 my school switched to BCBS. I believe BCBS requires a 6 month diet.
