Default Approved w/ surgery Date and now it is on hold...

Hi everyone! I am new here and love this site. There is so much vital information which is great. I am trying to learn all I can before and after surgery. Well, here is my story. I had my first appointment which included the psych, nut, seminar and all my medical record and my pcp letter in hand on June 4, 2008. I was approved on June 20, 2008. I had to go in to my diabetes doctor for final blood work and his clearance. Did this on Monday June 23, 2008. Wednesday I found out my A1C was 10.5. Way toooo high. So, my surgery that was scheduled for July 2, 2008 has been postponed. I am now taking a larger amount of Byetta (10mg) along with my 2K mg of metformin and now he added an insulin shot at bedtime. I know that it is for the best, it is just a stumble in the road. I heard that I was very lucky to be processed so fast, I know people that have been waiting 6 - 8 months just to get approved. So, what better way to wait then to read all the information here and gain so more knowledge.

Thanks everyone~this has been such a wonderful site to find!!

Sheila -

First of all I am sorry to hear about your trouble but are you checking your blood sugar on a regular basis? 10.5 A1c is insane for someone that soundsa like they are already being treated and monitored. That is nearly a 300 average blood sugar.

Please Please Please monitor your sugars better, I would also keep a simple log on your computer like I do so I know where my A1C id even before the doctor tells me what it is, the HAVOC that will unfold after extended periods of high A1C tests will un imaginable to me. When I was first diagnosed my A1C was 9.9 and since I have been diagnosed and taking my medications and limiting my carbs and sugar intake I have not had an A1C over 6.0 in the last 8 years, but I still live with complications. Do your best with your diet and never miss your medications so you can get that blood sugar under control.

I wish you the best of luck and good fortune in your WLS surgery journey.

Bob

i know you must be disappointed about the delay but just remember you have already been approved so this is just a little hiccup and before you know it you will be having your surgery and before you know it you will be off all medications for diabetes

Bob,
Your right. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago. My first pcp did nothing more than write out prescriptions and when I would tell him that my levels were high, he would say, give it time. After a year (which was too long) I found this wonderful doctor to help me. We have been trying different things, but the Byetta was working along with the metformin. Then all of a sudden, I was getting high readings and here we are. I know that I should be eating better and that is what I have been focusing on. My pcp told me that I should have had this surgery one year ago. My level was at 7 at the time. Keeping a log is a great ideal! I do need to limit my carbs and sugar that if for sure.

I wonder how long it is going to take to get my levels down enough to have the surgery? I mean if I get tested again next month, won't that be 2 months of bad and then my current month of hopefully good? 90 days? I just hope it wont be long!

Thanks for suggestions, I am going to start the log tonight!!

Sheila
