Default Question about timeline...

So, if you're required to do a 6 month pre-op diet, then at the end of the 6 months, do you already know when your surgery will be, or is there some sort of lag time between? I'm sure this could vary from facility to facility depending on the demand/wait list. But what has been your experience?

Also, do they give you a surgery date before you're actually approved by your insurance, or will they not schedule it until they know 100% that your insurance will pay?

The surgery must be scheduled when the information is submitted to insurance.

I got approved on Dec. 10... surgery was Feb 5... They won't schedule a thing until approval is in... so expect a little wait!

Because my BMI is so high >50, I do not need to do a 6 month diet, however; it's been a very long wait proccess to me. Grated I started doing all my appointments in April and I still don't have a surgery date. But I have everything done for my packet of paperwork. I had that completed at the end of May. I do know that I will have a few more NUT classes, more blood work, and I think another visit with the surgeon. But what I'm not sure about is if I will be approved for surgery with my insurance before all of those other appointments.

Here is a list of appointments that I had to do:

Referral from PCP, so a check-up so to speak
Surgery Seminar-Informational session
Doctors visit with Surgeon and NUT, same day appointment
Sleep Apena testing and CPAP trial, two appointments
Two therapy sessions- Therapist needed to write a letter that says, "Patient is stable for surgery."
Two group support sessions, Mandatory.
Blood work and stool sample
Psych Eval, my girl friends tell me I'm already nuts, so that was kinda pointless I new that outcome

I must say that I had my yearly up to date and I think that helped as well.

I hope this information helps.

Take care,

Kim~

Hi Jen! I think it depends on what state you are in. In California most insurance companies are not requiring the six month diet before approval, but some surgeons will require that you lose weight before surgery especially if you have lots of belly weight. As you can see from my timeline below, the process for me went very quickly. I was totally shocked at how quickly I was approved at every stage becasue my BMI was never over 40. Today my BMI is 37.5 and I am 10 days post op! Good Luck. April
