Vicci - It's basically going on liquids for 2-3 days til your body rids itself of the physical addiction it has to fat and sugar. You just drink lots of water, broth, and yogurt. You'll get headaches as you detox, and that's normal. After your body has all that crap out of it, you will have the appetite of a normal person. You won't physically crave cookies and chips and fried chicken anymore and you can start a nice light diet of fruits, veggies, oatmeal, soup, salad, cream of wheat, small portions.. to help you lose a few lbs each week before your surgery. Gives your surgeon room to work and greatly increases your chance of success. They say losing just 10% of your excess body weight takes a huge strain off your body.. That's only 20 or 30 lbs for most of us. For pre-ops I think it's a great idea to detox yourself and start to eat light, even if you don't have to because then you can look back and say that you were ready for it all and ready to take your life and your destiny into your own hands rather than kicking and screaming with a bag of oreos in your hand all the way to the operating room. It's about pride and honor I think

I completely understand the way you feel. I wanted to eat everything in sight for fear that I would never be able to have it again or something.
I too had a BMI well under 50 (41 to be exact) and my doctor was'nt very strict with me either, HOWEVER, he would'nt do the surgery if I gained.
I think that helped keep me under control.
Did your doctor tell you not to gain?

Hi Julia,
No he never mentioned anything just that as long as my BMI was below 50 i didnt need to do pre-op diet....
But i have decided to get the pre-op diet underway anyhow as i am so uncomfortable and self conscious at the moment and it dos'nt help when some one asks you "how far have you left?" referring to my pregnancy that ended 15 weeks ago!!!!!!!!!! so when i told her that i had a wee boy 15 weeks ago im not sure who was the most embarrassed!!!! Her face was purple
Now i am sure you understand why i need to kick my butt into shape.

Noonie, I don't have kids, but damn, you just had a baby 15 weeks ago? I have to wonder if your hormones are also contributing to this. I'm sure there's quite a window for your body to get back to "normal" after having a baby. I know that you aren't feeling like you have control and would like to be doing better, but you have a new baby in your life...that has to be stressful, on top of hormone changes! I'm not giving you an "excuse", but I can't imagine that it's helping much.

Hi Jenn,
Thanks for the support and yea you are probably right in what you say, but still need to nip it in the bud as dont feel like good old me at the moment but hopefully once the lbs start dropping i know i will feel better know the feeling as have done it so many times but at least this time will hopefully be the last with the aid of WLS.
Thanks once again.
