Kind of a stupid question but here goes...drains!
I don't have a surgery date or anything but I'm really freaked out about drains after surgery. Does everyone have one after lap rny? I remember my aunt having drains after hers and that totally freaked me out. Any support would be lovely.

I had two drains. One was removed the day after surgery and the second on the fourth day post op right before I went home. The second was kind of uncomfortable when it was removed but nothing I could not handle.

The drain is no biggie, it's just a part of the big picture.
Plus, you'll probably also have drains after reconstructive surgery.
So if it freaks you out now, make sure you have someone who can empty it out for you when you're home.
Having one didn't freak me, it just annoyed me, AND I wanted no part of emptying it, so my husband did it... he had no problem with it and yes, I'm glad.

Thanks for the input Cassie and Marella. I really appreciate it. I'll have plenty of people around after surgery so I guess I can just make one of them do it lol! Thanks again.

I didn't have any drains with my RNY. I did with my gallbladder operation back in 1981, though.. the surgeon thought he'd be funny and told me that taking the drain hurt and told me to take deep breaths and he'd pull it out on the count of three.. then said 1)...2).. and pulled it out.. never felt a thing.

I also had a drain when I had my gall bladder removed. I did not feel a thing when they took it out either. I could feel the hose on the outside of my stomach just rubbing over, but I did not feel anything on the inside. Kind of like if you would slide a rubber hose across your arm. It feels like nothing. Really, I would not be scared about that part in the least.

I didn't have a drain with my lap but I had 3 with my body lift. It wasn't that big of a deal. The 1st few days I couldn't drain them because it had to be measured etc and I was on drugs, but after that NO PROBLEM! Didn't hurt when they came out.
Ok I'm going to share a gross story but it didn't hurt so don't freak out! The last drain I had in had a slight clog in it so it wasn't draning like it should. We didn't know that it had a clog until the doc pulled it out and a TON (I'm talking puddle on the floor) fluid came running out. It was warm and weird. The doc had me hold a pad on it while he cleaned the floor when he was done we moved the pad and guess what???? Yep another puddle...lol That one leaked for a while so I just wore a pad over it. No biggie.

I had lap RNY on Monday (4 days ago) and I had one drain that was removed about an hour before I was discharged. The drain didn't hurt when it was in. The nurse did recommend that I pin it to my gown when I was walking, but I changed into comfy sweatpants and just sort of tucked it into the waistband so it didn't hang. It doesn't hurt when they empty it. Mine wasn't producing much, so they removed it before I was discharged. The removal didn't hurt, but it was really wierd. Mine was really long and I could feel it inside as it was being removed. It didn't hurt, the nurse and I were laughing, making Alien jokes, etc.
