Bad Breath?
My very sweet, supportive DH broke the news to me today that my breath stinks since going on this liquid diet.
Is this a common thing?
I didn't have bad breath before.

I didn't do the "liquid diet" except post op....and yes my breath STANK!!! It has something to do with Ketosis...and your body burning the fat and expelling it through your mouth. Wish I could help ya...I bought stock in sugar free mints and sucked on em like crazy and brushed my teeth and used mouth wash any time I went potty. Hang in there...things will get back to normal eventually!!

I didn't have a pre-op diet...but let me tell you post-op I could have taken paint off of the walls! It tastes sickly sweet and stinky at the same time...KETOSIS! But it tells you that you're losing weight...and it gets better, I promise!
The first month is bad, then it slowly fades after time (unless we just get used to it and I'm still having stinky breath and don't know it...)

Alum!
Go to the store in the seasonings area and pick up some Alum, its a white seasoning. Take a teaspoon of it and put it in 1/4 cup of water. After it dissolves, (take as much as u would use of mouthwash), and rinse and gargle it in the back of your throat. This really helps with bad breath! Its a trick my grandma gave me and it really works! Let me know how it goes for you.

I'm gonna try that b/c the taste in my mouth is not sitting well with me. It's horrible! I'm not so much worried about other people smelling it LOL but I can't stand the taste!

I've lost about 20 lbs in the last 3-4 weeks and my honey keeps whining about my breath. It's just a part of losing weight. When you cut out the carbs that your body is used to, it goes into ketosis and starts burning the fat and that's what people smell on your skin and breath.. just chew minty gum and wear lotion and hope it covers it up

I swear I could rename my Gastric experience as "The Breathsavers Diet." I should publish that! I have never eaten so many sugar free mints in my life. I still am a little self conscious about my breath, but at the beginning of the process, like Cathy said, I could peel paint off the walls and disfigure other people during conversations. I'm pretty sure, for awhile there, that I was the reason we had no flies in our house!
Try the gargle, buy some Scope and take stock in one of the Mint companies. It gets better, but it will be unpleasant for awhile.
The upside of it is that it makes it easy to get rid of people you don't want to talk to...just speak all breathy and sexy like: "HHHHI, HHHHHow are YYYYYou?" Just think of all the time you'll save trying to avoid people!
Good luck!
-Mike

mine was TERRIBLE but now that i'm finally able to eat again it's starting to lesson.
One thing that helped me was taking in some carbs at my NUT's recommendation. She said w/o supplying the body with an alternate fuel source, the body will remain in a state of high ketosis (i'd lost like 50 lbs in 4 weeks!) and the liver will continue to turn the fat into fuel, giving off the acetone in your skin, urine and breath.
Another thing I do religiously is at night i have a half glass of "Simply Lemonade" diluted 50% with ice. The lemon acid cuts the taste a lot. Just make sure you're actively taking an acid reducer like prilosec if you do this to ensure you don't cause any damage to the pouch
