Default In Denial

Ok, I think I am in denial about the surgery. Not like I don't WANT to have it, but that I don't believe it is happening or something. I can't really put my finger on it. I think it might be because I have so long to wait (July 22nd). I am still in my old eating habits, which worries me the most. Granted, I don't eat that horribly compared to how I used to eat, but it's still not good or normal. My problem is, with my work schedule (retail schedule that varies from 8:30-7 to 11-8:30 and every shift in between) I generally only have time to eat 2 times a day, once at work, and ocne when I get home after work at about 9:00 pm at night. My 9:00 PM dinner is usually big because I am starving. My favorite at the moment is a burrito from chipotle. My lunch varies depending on what is convenient that day. Sometimes I pack something sensible like a turkey sandwich on weigth watchers bread with mustard, sometimes I go next door to the pizza shop and pick up a quick slice. I tried eating breakfast, but it makes me 3 times as hungry throughout the day! I have even found that I haven't been surfing the forum as much lately, and I LOVE this forum!

Did anyone else experience this pre-op? Any advice for kicking the bad habit?

as soon as I started prepping for preop I decided I would try to get used to the diet I was given as a post op "day 66 and ongoing" diet (Stage V)... if I can keep to 1500 calories (9 servings of protein a day), I figure I am doing well... It's hard to run over the calors if you are concentrating on the protien and starting with that as your ingestion goal.

I am doing eggs, chicken, cheese... and the occaisional "Test" drink (instant carnation, isopure, etc)

I think its helping my inches and my pounds a bit.

good luck.

Hey girl, you're doing A LOT better than me and my partner Danita did pre-op. We ate like it was the friggin last supper! I'm talking anything, anytime we wanted it. We knew we weren't going to be able to have it ever again so we ate bad food like it was GOING OUT OF STYLE!!!!!

My only suggestion is that you plan ahead, pack your food, and make good choices if you HAVE to eat out. I'm not really one to give this kind of advice because I'm the queen of eating what I want...lol...but since you're doing pretty good already, I know you can do it! Good luck with your surgery. We'll all be here for you on the other side.

Thanks! I am bracing myself for some tough love. I kind of feel like I deserve it, like I'm not committing myself. I am being very har don myself lately. I am definitely experiencing the bariatric emotional rollercoaster!

Yes, it does sound like you are being hard on yourself, but I do want to applaud you for also recognizing that what you're doing eating-wise is probably not the best idea. It really helped me when I was pre-op to spend the month before my surgery living 95% of the time like I was already a post-op. I got the post-op menu from my doctor and stocked up on applesauce, cottage cheese, protein drinks, etc., and began with replacing one meal a day with a protein drink. Then, I started tracking and recording my food and cut my calories down like blisandt said. I admit, though, that I was also motivated and scared to death by my surgeon's threats to cancel my surgery if I came to my appointment over my goal weight (I had to lose 10% to get approved). But whatever my motivation originally was, it did really help prepare me for the transition to post-op life. So I do encourage you to try and make a few changes, but also just take care of yourself and try not to get too down. You want to be going into your surgery with a positive outlook as well. Best of luck!

I didn't have to lose any weight before surgery but couldn't gain. So I was careful, but not much. I made sure during that last week, I ate the things I thought I would miss. I didn't really diet at all before. But like you, I didn't have real bad habits. I only ate 2 meals a day and no snacking except the occasional once or twice a week.

For everyone who was in my shoes with a bad preop diet, was it hard to switch over? I mean, I still want to adjust before the surgery, but was it hard post-op to adjust to such a drastic change? Or does it just kind of flow with all the other changes going on with your body?

I'm still in my pre op classes and get weighed every other week. The first few months I was eating like it was my LAST SUPPER. Holy cow. And I gained. But now the last three months of the classes I'm trying to do better but its sooooo hard!! I'm a night eater and after working hard all day I wanna go home and eat! I've made all the steps emotionally and read all the books...but I'm afriad after surgery I'm gonna fall back to my ways... I'm with ya snick. I cant put my finger on the surgery either it seems so far away and feels like its never gonna happen!! I've been fat for soooo long I'm ready to feel better!

Dude!

Here is what I ate the last 6 months before I started my pre-op diet....

Burritos of every persuasion...pork/beef/bean/cheese/rice...No Chipotle's...too healthy.no chicken...why bother when there is...

Fried Chicken! Popeyes/KFC/homemade/Claimjumper! (this is my fave...over ice cream even)

Ice Cream! Choco/Pnut butter/P&C/english toffee

STEAK! Outback/Kobe beef/Carne Asada

Cheesecake! Whatever/whenever!

Chocolate...I bought a pound of See's truffles every other week.

And my doc wondered why my A1C was so high? LOL Actually, all this toned way down when he put me on Glucophage(metformin) and that screwed up my taste buds.

By the time I started my liquid pre-ops, I was so ready.

You are doing fine.
