Default Liquid Diet Question

I'm in Day 7 of the Liquid Diet.

How much should I be losing?

If my sugar is good, should I stop taking my metformin?

Thanks!!!

I assume you are pre op??

You will probably lose some water weight, but there is no hard and fast rule.
Regarding your metformin....ask your MD if you should be taking it or possibly half the dose. The last thing you want is your surgery to be cancelled due to DKA. They know you the best and your medical history.

Do NOT stop taking any of your meds without talking to your doctor first.

As far as losing, it's a very variable thing. Heavier people will lose more than lighter people. Men lose more than women. It also depends on how strict your Liquid Diet is...as I found out recently, every surgeon has his own version of the pre-op liquid diet, and they vary greatly. For example, some "liquid diets" allow a small dinner, some allow protein shakes, some allow cream of chicken soup, some are straight liquid, etc.

So, all of that being said, it's not a good thing to compare your weight loss to others...both at this stage and after surgery.

I just had my surgery last Thursday, and had a 10 day full liquids pre-op diet with 3 SF protein drinks a day (a pretty strict one, from the comments I received here). I was starting out by losing 4 or 5 lbs, and then my blood pressure pill got changed to one without a diuretic in it. Within a day or so, my weight went back up because of water retention. By the morning of surgery, I believe I ended up losing a total of 5 or 6 lbs on the liquid diet (not sure, I'd have to check where I wrote it down). This is definitely less than I expected, but the purpose of the diet is 2 things: to help shrink your liver a bit to aid the surgeon (makes your surgery much safer), and to help "clear" you out.

Good luck with everything!

Don't stop taking your meds! Talk to the doc but people generally keep taking metformin before/after surgery for awhile at least.

Surgery really stresses out the body and while I was in the hospital they ended up giving me insulin as well as my metformin because my numbers were over 300 and that was without a thing to eat!

It went down pretty quickly afterwards but they made a big deal about keeping on the metformin plus, when I was on Atkins I asked my doc about going off metformin b/c my levels were below 100 and she told me to stay on it because it was good respite for my body which had been marinating in high blood sugars for longer than the short time I was in the low numbers.

And, of course, ask your doc and do what s/he says!

Default Called the doc

I rec'd permission to stop taking the metformin as long as I closely monitor my blood sugar.

Thanks for everyone's helpful advice.
