yeouch
my pain is still ongoing, but seems to be getting better every day. Couldn't ask for more than that.
I'm trying to be brave (or stupid) and haven't taken any of the pain meds so far though. I really hate that drugged up feeling so much. but.. if it continues to bother me with all the moving and shaking i'm doing, I'll have to break down and take a swig of the lortab.
Quick question though... was/is anyone able to really get 64 oz of water in during the first week post-op? I'm having a really difficult time of it. I think today i've had approx 32 oz between water, propel, 50/50 juice/water and warm SF apple cider (mmm and the warm was nice on the tummy).
Seems every time i drink my stomach gurgles. I stil have a lot of air looming around in there me-thinks.. and passing it the good ol fashion way is harder than i ever thought it'd be
Oh.. just as a funny today.. I went to get in my shower at home and turned down the sprayer so it wasn't hitting on my poor bruised body so hard.. and the dang thing broke. So no shower. My mom and sister and gang asked me over for a little while to celebrate my 30th today.. so i packed up all my shower stuff and clean clothes and indulged there. Ahh so fantastic... then i reach toward my back, happily washing.. and there's something foreign on me. I feel around, not being able to see my attacker that's attached itself to me in such an odd place.. and have to call in Mom. Now.. no fat girl likes to be seen naked to begin with.. but being 30, fat and having your mom see what octopus suction cup has a hold of your fatness.. Oy.. luckily she just laughed and pulled hard and showed me a node they apparantly overlooked at the hospital. they should put you through a metal detector before discharge

today is the first day that I have really gotten most of my fluids in. It gts better daily. some of the older wiser sages on here told me not to worry too much about protein the first week but to concentrate on the liquids. Today is the first day that I have not taken any pain meds. I have been weaning myself and finally got some liquid tylenol and did take that once.

Keep the updates of your progress coming. Its nice to hear it has you go thru it so I can me more prepared. Sounds like each day brings less pain and more progress towards reaching your goals on water and protein.
One day at a time, Debs

Crie, in regards to your question it is pretty hard to get in that 64 oz of water that first couple of weeks. I remember that I just felt SO bloated with the gas that it was a real struggle to get much of anything in. You just do the best that you can. For me that first week the goal was 50 grams of protein and 32 oz of water gradually increasing both as tolerated. I usually got in my protein but the way my surgeon does it makes that easier. I had a protein product from his office that had 15 grams of protein in like only 6 oz of fluid. I just had to get 4 of those in a day and I was good to go with the protein. In between that I did my water.
Hang in there, it does get better but it isn't easy, that's for sure.

as far as pain medicine goes..
a very wise woman (my mother ) said..
Pain does not make healing go faster.
it's okay to use your Lortab as you need it.. you will be surprised at how quickly you won't. I used it as often as I needed (and omg for a few days I did use it for the shoulder pain!) and still have over half the bottle left when I stopped.
It's okay to want to be pain free. It will probably help you heal better and have a better frame of mind for the long run!

thanks ladies for the info
fortunately, my doctor doesn't start on the protein until week 2 along with the vitamins. so right now i'm still only on clear liquids. And honestly.. tonight is the first time i've made broth. Otherwise i've just been drinking water and waterstuffs and sf apple cider.
I had about 5 spoonfulls of strained vegetable broth tonight. tasted yummy but not really interested. But from other posts i've read it sounds pretty normal not to be interested in any thing during the first week. i'm just really trying to remember to drink and walk.
