Default Emotions, is this normal?

I'm on day 4 of 14 of my pre-op liquid hell diet and I wonder if my irratic emotions are normal.

I havent been 100% compliant with my diet, it's been much harder than I expected.

During the night of day 2-3, I was so hungry I was literlly shaking. I ended up eating a bowl of chili.

Yesterday I made the chili receipe from the forum and at first only had some of the juice. Later in the day I ended up having a small bowl.

Today I had a side salad with fat free dressing and the grilled chicken and while wheat bun from the sandwich...

needless to say I feel like a complete failure.

I dont eat b/c of emotion or boredom, I eat b/c I'm flat HUNGRY. I've only done this once per day, even tho it sounds like more....

Am I a failure? Am I doomed to fail at this?

And my emotions, I am SO MAD all the time. I bite the heads off everyone. Everything just really ticks me off.

And then again I feel like I'm going crazy, I could cry sometimes at the drop of a hat.

The DH is supportive but I can tell my ANGER is wearing him down.

Is this normal?

What can I do to wrap my mind back around this pre-op thing, the clear liquids...Will the hunger pass?

I fee like such a failure. I just want to sleep and be left alone.

I'm not sure but are you the one that said your pre-op diet included NO protein at all?

Have you reconfirmed this with your nutritionist/surgeon? It just sounds like it's way more extreme than most of the pre-op diets.

it's clear liquids, broth, diet soda, SF jello....

no sugar no calories, or very little calories. I dont see any allowances for protein

But you've not checked with the doctor to confirm this? If I were you, I would call, anyway.

Wow...no protein, I cannot imagine. I am thinking of you, sending positive thoughts., Seriously I really do not understand this. Your body has to have nutrition to survive or it will start to shut down. It is going to go into starvation mode. Has anyone else here been through this with no protein shakes?

i'm also on day 4. its been really really really hard with all the broth and found out that the saccharin in the SF jello makes me ill so i can't have that anymore.

I've just been draining off soup and trying to choke down the broth whenever possible and just drinking as much propel as i can.

I was out with my mom yesterday and she said i was pale as a ghost and was afraid i was going to pass out. Just really need to drink more water (bleh) to keep from getting dehydrated.

10 more days theresa.. 10 more days!

If you feel you HAVE to have something, I'd call Sarah and tell her you're having problems. If you're diabetic, watch your sugars and it said to have some 100% fruit juice or an ensure if you're dropping low

the worst i've been so far are 2 sf pudding cups and about 2 cups of no salt light butter popcorn to actually CHEW something.

That actually sounds like the early post-op diet. Usually the pre-op 14 day diet is something like 800 cal/day high protein optifast or some other low cal high protein diet. I would double check because I don't think it is possible be successfully compliant on chicken broth (5-40 cal/serving) for 2 weeks straight pre op. I'd call your surgeon.

But post-op, they'd be pushing protein, too.. (at least mine was.. they said no matter what I needed to focus on getting protein in.

That is what I was thinking too.. I just can't imagine that the body would be ready for all the stresses one encounters during surgery & immediately after, if one is basically starving for two weeks.

I don't know how you could get through 2 weeks of a clear liquid diet and not take EVERYONE'S head off!! I really feel for you because you honestly must feel like shit! I've done clear liquids for 24 hours before a colonoscopy and that about did me in. Your surgeon's expectations do seem really extreme to me. I did an 800 cal diet before surgery but I had about 80-100 grams of protein a day. Like others said I would call and double check and if this is really what they want let them know it isn't working and see if they will allow you to have protein drinks too.

Usually the preop diets need to be low calorie, low fat, low carbs and high protein. Those are the things that will shrink your liver. As long as the food falls into that it should accomplish the same thing as a total clear liquid diet.

I can't even imagine what this kind of diet does to someone who is a diabetic!

Don't feel like you are a failure!! You aren't! You've really had expectations put on you that have set you up to fail. I'm sorry, I'm not usually one to tell someone not to follow their doctor's meal plans but this really is extreme and doesn't sound real safe. I'm a nurse and if we ever have patients in the hospital who are only on a clear liquid diet believe me they will be having supplemental IV nutrition going along with it.

I'm not saying just go off his/her diet plan but I am saying that if I were you I would be talking to my doctor and verbalizing my concerns and letting him/her know how I was feeling.
