Sweetie, there is no "umph" in that. I understand that you want to stick with what your surgeon is requesting but I'm having a really hard time understanding it. I do have a medical background and this is something that is making me cringe just seeing what they are requesting of you. There essentially is NO nutrition in there at all. You would be lucky to get 200 calories. I'm sorry, that just isn't safe or healthy! Your body is just not going to be in any shape to handle a major surgery if you go in with no nutritional reserves. It is your choice and I can see you want to do what is right in the eyes of your surgeon and nutritionist but I honestly would recommend getting the protein shakes...there are non-dairy based ones out there and most of them are mixed with water, not milk and drink like 3 of those a day. Believe me, your liver will still be shrinking as long as you are on a low calorie, low fat, high protein diet. That is the reason for the preop diet...it is to shrink your liver and losing some weight is good but the most important thing is to shrink the liver.

I am always one to say...follow your doctor's plan but I am also one to say, you need to also be your own advocate. I honestly think this is one of those situations that would apply.

You honestly can't make it two full weeks without nutrition so what is happening is that you are basicly being set up to fail and maybe make things worse because you are so hungry. If you do the protein drinks, which is what most of us were required to do preop you should be fine and still be getting the nutrition you need to stay on track.

Just my opinion...again, I'm sorry to be pounding this at you but when I see something medically that scares me...well I really can't keep my mouth shut.

Probably feel this had been discussed to death by now, but M03.. can you double check that the no dairy, no protein liquid diet you're reading is for the full two weeks, and not just for the last day or so?

I've heard of people having to do that liquid fast for the last day but two weeks - insane.

I know you're probably sick of me pushing you on this but I just am very worried about you. Sorry.

I agree. My surgeon explained to me the day of my consultation about the liquid preop diet, but talked time and time again about drinking protein shakes during this time. Maybe you can ask your surgeon why he has you on such a strict liquid diet? Maybe he has good reasons that no one here has soncidered, but I have to agree that he is setting you up to fial. He can't expect your hunger to not win on a diet like this. I hope you don't feel like I am hounding you here, but we are all very worried about the situation you are in. We want to see you get through this healthy!! :-)

it's really really REALLY hard to keep straight on this plan!

I cracked last night and ate a bagel with margerine on it. today all i've had again is some broth and water and i'm starving. my stomach has been growling since after lunch time and i'm tired and weak and just plain bitchy.

Going to email the doctors office tomorrow to see if there is SOMETHING i/we can do more than the clear liquids for the next 10 days

my 2 cents.. again is that if you are gonna cheat/fall off the "wagon" (blah this hardly seems like cheating) then maybe a protein shake would be a better cheat than the other stuff?

Just curious if you had talked to your surgeon about the diet he has you on? If so, did he give you some answers? How have you been doing on it the past couple of days? Hang in there! It will be over soon!
