Default Ice vs. plain water

This is probably the single most DUMB question/post/thread ever posted on TT.

But here it is..

How do you calculate how much water you've taken in if you actually just chewed ice? How does the volume of ice calculate into actual ounces of fluid you've ingested?

Does this make sense to ANYONE?

My reason for asking is this: I love to chew ice. I've found that the act of chewing ice all but eliminates my cravings for diet soda or my desire to "graze"

I was wondering how to translate that "ice" into oz. of liquid consumed..

Anyone have any input?

suggestions?
medications for my insanity?

A few weeks ago, I did what Dave suggested, and for me, the average ice cube was almost exactly 1 oz of fluid, so that is how I count my ice.

I started making Hazelnut Decaf Iced coffee at work.......... YUMM.. I make it with 16 oz of coffee & six ice cubes for a total of 22 oz of fluid.. I have one in the AM and one in the afternoon.. Added to the big mug of decaf tea on my ride in to work and I've got a good start on my fluids for the day.

I miss ice in my drinks badly.

I haven't been able to drink anything colder than room temperature since surgery.

I know at the hospital we figure half of the amount of ice, but that is crushed ice so it probably makes a difference. For example 64 oz of ice would be 32 oz of water. Most accurate though would be the way Dave suggested since not all ice cubes are the same size.

This doesn't answer the actual question, but...

I hear that the desperate need to chew ice means you are low on iron. Can anyone confirm this?

As far as the amount of water in ice... if you fill up let's say an 8 oz glass with water AND ice and you drink & chew the whole thing, then you have taken in exactly 8 oz of water, no more. The ice does not take up more "space" because it's frozen.

Now, if you just chew a cup full of ice (without water), that's another thing. No telling how much water it is unless it melts first.

Make sense?

THANKS for all the replies..

and CiCi..it makes perfect sense.

I've been meaning to look up that urge to chew ice, I wondered if there was a "reason" for it.

Also, have y'all ever heard of people craving raw meat? Like hamburger, maybe sprinkled with salt? Or craving dirt??

I know it's sign of some deficiency, but it's odd none the less.

here's what the Mayo Clinic said about chewing ice:

Quote:
Answer
Possibly. Doctors use the term "pica" to describe craving and chewing substances that have no nutritional value — such as ice, clay, cornstarch or paper. Craving and chewing ice (pagophagia) is often associated with iron deficiency anemia — although it may be associated with other nutritional problems as well.

It's not known why some people with iron deficiency anemia crave and chew ice. Researchers from one recent study suggested it may be because of ice's pain-relieving properties, since some people with iron deficiency anemia experience tongue pain and inflammation (glossitis). The same researchers found that ice has a new and better taste to some people who are iron deficient.

In some individuals, pica is a sign of emotional problems, such as stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder or a developmental disorder.

A thorough medical evaluation can help determine if pica is due to an underlying medical condition. If the cause of pica is an emotional or developmental issue, cognitive behavioral therapy may be helpful.
