Hey hey hey! Everyone!

All DID go well, but I had to have an open, plus the surgery took 6 hours. I went home Thursday because the doc thought it would be better for me. The hospital food only had vanilla Carnation Instant Breakfast and I just couldn't drink that all day.

The biggest problem I had is bloating. They thought it might be kidney problems, but a Lasik (water pill) later and it got me flowing.

I'm still bloated. Water weight gain was about 20 pounds. Heck!

Getting out of bed is the toughest -- but I've had an open belly before and I was prepared for this, so the anxiety wasn't there like after my last post-op. Neither were the complications.

I didn't need the morphine for very long -- plus, my swelling kicked my IV out and they couldn't get a new one started anywhere, so I had to switch to pills. No big deal. The pain in the back from the hospital bed was worse than the pain in the stitches.

My roomy had it done via lap. Wow, even her hair looked good the next day!

Next biggest problem: coughing... still can't get out a good one. My husband packed the Neti Pot on his last trip and left it at the hotel. I was raring to clean my sinuses this AM but he's not here for the Walmart pilgrimage.

BUT, it's one day at a time, and with the help of an old pair of crutches, I got out of bed on my own this morning and set out to update my food-intake journal.

Cream of Wheat for breakfast! Yummy! (but I love that stuff anyway).

I want good news from everyone!!!!!! Let's get spunky!

Yay, Marella! I'm glad you have a spunky attitute, even though things weren't 100% with your experience!

I gained 12 pounds from the IV, but have dropped that plus a couple more, which is nice. I hadn't prepared myself for looking at a scale with such high numbers again! LOL!

So far everything I've eaten has tasted good, and has stayed down just fine. V8 Juice causes gas, but nothing else does. I'm keeping a very detailed nutrition journal (more detailed than Barix requires) because I know it will help me down the road.

Having the surgery lap, I'm feeling terrific and drove today (only 1/4 mile, to the park so I could walk). We live on a busy road and it's not safe to walk to the park entrance. I walked too far, and walking back to my car was exhausting -- I'll be more careful next time. I almost flagged down a park ranger to pick me up!

Yes, let's get spunky!!!

very watery Cream of Wheat! no more than 2 ounces.

My biggest hurdle is finding a comfortable position to sleep in. I'm sleeping in 1.5 hr to 2 hr intervals. I get up to drizzle and then I lay down again or take a walk and then I lay down again. I keep a protein drink around me all the time so that I down that first (sipping about 3 oz /her) and then I put in liquid every now and again so that I can have my daily intake of where my doc wants me.

'thann I'm doing the same thing, keeping a more detailed journal than required because I am concerned about protein (don't want hair loss), ordehydration.

Because I can't roll over on my own (yet), I feel like a beached whale. I hate the dreams the pain meds are giving me so I've halved the dosage but rest isn't easy.

Sorry guys, just frustrated. The house is alseep and I'm awake. I want my husband to be able to sleep for awhile without me bugging him for help.

Default Marella...

First of all let me say congratulations on your RNY. Second could I make a suggestion? Have you tried a few extra pillows? I can't sleep on my back, but after surgery if you prop yourself up with a few extra pillows and then support the back of your knees with a couple of pillows it relieves the pressure off your back. Maybe this would help you sleep more comfortably. Almost like being in a recliner, but laying in bed instead. The hardest part for me was the getting in and out of bed (still is) I'm only 5' and we have a king size so it's kinda the superman thing. If your bed is tall, try using a step stool for a little while just to make things a little easier, but be careful!!! Wishing all of you gals a speedy recovery!

BTW Deborah... I just double-checked that Cream of Wheat, and like I wrote, made with skim milk, but also diluted with extra to make it watery (yet nice and hot) was OK on my list as fluids for my first 2 weeks.

Gosh I got worried. I know that all docs or bariatric centers have different criteria in what they consider appropriate in these phases or stages of food intake.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes!

Sharon... Thank you.

Each day seems to be 100% better from the previous. I was finally able to lay down, but only on my left side. I have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo and rolling over on to my right in slow motion without sitting up in the process just makes the room spin.

I forgot I had a back rest, one of those 'big' wedges and that has given me a chance to lay down, but not be completely flat and it seems to be working (if only that drizzling need would realize that I'm trying to sleep)

I'm wearing a tummy binder (have to wear it until doc says it's OK to take off because I asked him NOT to give me retention sutures and he made me very happy) so I feel like I'm wearing an eternal girdle. (and I haven't worn a girdle since I got pregnant 15 years ago.) I undo it to clean the sutures and drainage, to scratch and just let my skin loose, but without getting up so as not to upset the stitches.

FWI: retention sutures are no picnic -- been there, had that and once was plenty bad enough! ! ! so I promised to be a good girl with the binder!
