Feeling Left Out
Hey everyone! Now that I am getting closer to getting a surgery date, I am getting really scared. I keep thinking about all the things that I won't be able to have while everyone else is eating what they want. Will get the left out feeling? Has anyone else had these feelings? What do I do?
I have started drinking a protein shake for one meal just to get into the routine.
Am I normal or just paranoid?

You may feel that way for a while because food has been that which you socialize around and have the relationship with. One day down the road you will be driving home from the party after having not grazed the buffet table to realize that you had a great time with the PEOPLE there rather than the food....

That feeling for me went away pretty quick after surgery...a few months after surgery and I felt "normal" again in social situations.

I agree with Deborah totally. I didn't really ever have this feeling because family and my co workers have all be so supportive. Some of the girls I work with have actually dropped a few pounds because the don't want to snack and eat ice cream in front of me.

I think the trick is to step aside from our current state of mind. Which is NOT easy at all!! But we absolutely have to FOCUS on what we will gain, NOT on what we have to give up. Because if you really think about it all we have to give up is a misery.
I was thinking about those same things. When will I be able to eat ice cream again? Will I be able to eat red meat? Will I regret that surgery after all? But then I had to think what is it I really want … and what I REALLY want has nothing to do with FOOD! I really want to get to size when I can do things I have been deprived off for so long. I want to go hiking and keep up with my friends! I want to wear that nice dress I have in my closet for 10 years! And I want (forgive me my dear hubby) men to turn around and look at me when pass them on the street!
I will not let an ice cream or burger to stand on my way! When I think what this food will cost me I don’t really want it anymore. I do not want to jeopardize my goals, not for a second!
Focus on what you want; always look forward and it will help you to stay strong!
Food luck!
Tonya

Well I am pre op also, getting a date soon, but the way I see this is...I may not be able to eat like they can after surgery, but I'm getting something out of this that they aren't, and I don't mean for that to sound sellfish. Just that I eat differently, and will be rewarded for it, rather than not being rewarded for eating like others do.

Lots of good points have been made, and I agree. For me, when I was recovering from surgery, it was often very difficult, but I did not feel as left out as I was afraid I was going to. Sure, when I was sitting there sipping liquids and my family was eating fresh, hot pizza, I had several twinges of sadness/depression/etc., BUT those moments passed really quickly once I pictured actually putting that pizza in my mouth and trying to eat it. My pouch would absolutely NOT have handled me actually doing that!!! In my early days post-op, I was still feeling very tender, slightly nauseous, slightly scared. I had an easy recovery compared to many, but I still felt a bit like a ticking time bomb -- I never knew WHAT was going to piss off the pouch and send me running for the bathroom. I still use that tactic for many things that I think I want to eat -- I just picture how it's gonna feel actually in my mouth and then in the pouch and often times it turns my stomach to even consider. It's helped me a lot!
