Anybody here that DIDN'T need an endoscopy??
Hey all, in preparation for my April 28th surgery, I've already had my pre-op testing which consisted of only a blood test and EKG...I was expecting an endoscopy though and never had one, nor did my surgeon suggest one. I was wondering if an endoscopy is one of the things thats absolutly required, or do some surgeons not do one??
I was also not given any special instructions for a liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery, are these wacky instructions or what?????

I do not need an endoscopy, nor will I be on a two week diet. I believe I just have to have nothing after midnight the night before. My guess is every surgeon is different as to which tests they require, and how much of a liquid diet you need. It also, sometimes, has to do with how big your liver is. Good luck.

Thanks for clearing that up Laura. I was starting to worry that maybe my surgeon wasn't following correct procedure guidelines, glad I'm not the only one!

at FAHC, an endoscopy is a standard part of the process, so is the liquid diet, however, the liquid diet thing is for folks who are about to have lap RNY as opposed to open RNY. Si to me, that does seem a little strange, but...there does seem to be alot of wiggle room ( as you read around this forum) with what drs do or recommend pre-op. Good luck

Hmmm...very strange, I'm getting it laproscopically done with no mentions on the aftercare sheet about a liquid diet 2 weeks BEFORE surgery, (of course they stress a liquid diet at least 2 weeks AFTER surgery....if they didn't then I'd really see a red flag...lol)
I guess different surgeons have different methods and ways about how to prepare pre-op. <shrug>

Nope...
I also did not need and endoscopy. I did have a 2 1/2 week pre-op liquid diet, and of course 2weeks after (it will be over on Wednesday!!! Yahoo!
f/f Refried beans, yogurt, and pudding here I come!)
Yes, all docs are a bit different in what they require pre-op, it seems to depend on what the latest studies showed during their last training conference.

No endoscopy, no 2-week pre-diet. I asked specifically why no liquid diet prior to surgery, and the doctor said it is determined on a case-by-case basis. In my case, I have an 'hourglass' figure (don't know exactly why that matters, but the doctor said it did), and my liver was also determined to not to be fatty (doctor did palpitations and an ultrasound).
