Who did this before surgery...
So, how many people went kinda crazy with their eating pre-surgery...pre-liquid diet, of course?
Did anyone feel the need to eat your "last meals"....
???
anyone let it all hang out in your last 2 weeks? is it normal?

Yes, I did. For me it was more of visiting favorite restaurants one last time. I also went on a 4 day trip to the coast to attend a wedding - I didn't go crazy but I didn't really stick to my diet either. I gained about 8 pounds before my liquid diet and pushed myself to a BMI of 54, with a 55 being grounds to cancel surgery. However I stuck (except see below) to the liquid diet and dropped my weight so my BMI was 52ish on the day of surgery.
My "last supper" before the liquid diet was at my favorite mexican restaurant and I cheated on day 2 of the LD and had some BBQ'ed shrimp (but I had hiked 5 hilly miles that day). After that meal I stuck to the diet, but was allowed to eat veggies on it so I ate lots of salads.

I havent been watching what I eat and I admit, I've stopped taking my metformin..it messes up my stomach..
but my sugar is 449 tonight....but some of it is from a UTI..
but I've been having real coke, ice cream..not too much mind you, but I have been eating what "normal" folks eat.....things I stay away from b/c of my sugar.
I'm regretting it too, right now I'm having to look at the screen with one eye b/c my vision is so blurry...

I don't want to wag any fingers, especially not ever having had diabetes, but I am gravely concerned about your blood sugar. I level that high can put you into a diabetic coma or suffer very serious side effects that, in addition to other things, could be grounds to cancel your surgery. =0/
What you are talking about in terms of "last meals" is a phenomena called "Last Supper Syndrome" (please correct me if I'm wrong). I think many people feel the need to say goodbye to "bad foods". I understand this and admittedly had my farewell from Olive Garden. If you are going to do that, it needs to be controlled. Sticking to a medication routine will be very critical post-op, especially with uncontrolled diabetes you need to take care of yourself an think about why the rules are in place. The liquid diet (usually 2 weeks before surgery) is used to shrink your liver, but also to quickly reduce weight to make overall surgical risks lower.
Please please consult your surgeon or PCP to get your sugars under control.
(I hope I didn't step on any toes)

Yes somewhat. Before I started my pre op diet we ate out more to places I wanted. And eating out is just something we never did unless we had company or something like that.
I have stuck to my pre op liquid diet pretty good but then last night adn tonight I had real food. Ordered Chinese last night and we went to Cracker Barrel with a friend after the ball game. Last night I could tell I hadn't eaten anything like that in a long time cause I was sick. So far tonight I feel fine though. And I have my surgery Tuesday. I felt bad but it was hot and I really didn't want to have soup today

You're correct in that she needs to get those sugars under control.. and eating like that added to skipping medication is asking for serious trouble!
Having uncontrolled sugars can slow the healing process and could possibly be grounds for postponement of the surgery due to the risks.
My blood sugars weren't that high and I ended up on insulin.. (still am.. ugh)...
MO3.. post-op, you will suffer a great deal if you continue to neglect your diet & medicines.. please see your doctor about your BG levels, ASAP... you don't want to suffer complications.. believe me! they suck

I haven't felt the need to eat any of the foods that I have loved so much over the years. This is part of my past, now it's time to look to the future. So the answer is no, I've had no Last Supper.

I'm pretty psyched that my surgeon doesn't require a 2 week liquid diet pre-op, so I'm livin' life right now and eating all of my favorite (bad)food. I made a pledge to eat pizza every day of the week once a day so I would never miss it again (I know, I know, sounds bad, but can ya blame me?)

Well...I'll smash those toes!!!
Do not stop your metformin!!!! Not now anyways...
You really, truly need to be in the best possible shape to have this surgery and if you have a HIGH glucose level...it's going to screw you up in the long haul, that is if your doctor will even do surgery! My anesthesiologist tested mine right before surgery. I KNOW first hand how crappy Metformin/Glucophage can be on your tummy...talk to your doctor about possibly changing medications, there are alot out there to try.
That said...yes, I had two milk shakes, In-N-Out, and other not-good-for-you foods...and I hardly EVER ordered milk shakes (maybe 1 a year). But know that you will be able to eat your favorite foods...you may need to "modify" them to fit your pouchies mood-swings though.
Again...PLEASE get those sugars under control...this is your LIFE you are risking...can you say C-O-M-A?
Sorry...but it concerns me greatly.
Cathy
PS~ I "weaned" myself off of caffeine prior to surgery...I'd highly recommend that too!
