Cathy is right. If you don't have those numbers under control your surgery might be cancelled. Last summer (when I was 40 lbs lighter and WLS was the furthest thing from my mind!) I was supposed to have surgery to repair two incisional hernias and was told that the surgery would be cancelled if I didnt get my bg under control. Well, I ended up cancelling the surgery myself due to having to move and other stresses and gaining weight, going onto insulin..u get the picture..but yeah, your surgery can be cancelled if you dont have control of your diabetes.
About 7 yrs ago I went to the ER. My bg was 702. They were amazed that I was still walking the planet. Peanut M&M's are the Devil!

Well I do have to say this..
I have a real;ly bad UTI right now...which is causing high sugar. If there are any diabetic women out there, you know what else high sugar causes. So I have THAT infection to deal with.
I have drank a couple real cokes, some sweet tea and had more "regular" food than usual lately...but I dont want it to sound like I've gorged myself on pure sugar or anything....I havent.
I have allowed myself a snack cake a couple times in the mornings and I've had a couple candy bars. But nothing major I dont think.
I did take my meds this morning. But I will say this, with the blazing UTI, the meds arent doing anything.
I am going to do my best to cut out any excess sugar, carbs and all the other mess that causes high sugar, to hopefully get this down some...I cant stand this. I start my liquid diet in 2 weeks

You really, truly need to be in the best possible shape to have this surgery and if you have a HIGH glucose level...it's going to screw you up in the long haul, that is if your doctor will even do surgery! My anesthesiologist tested mine right before surgery. I KNOW first hand how crappy Metformin/Glucophage can be on your tummy...talk to your doctor about possibly changing medications, there are alot out there to try.
That said...yes, I had two milk shakes, In-N-Out, and other not-good-for-you foods...and I hardly EVER ordered milk shakes (maybe 1 a year). But know that you will be able to eat your favorite foods...you may need to "modify" them to fit your pouchies mood-swings though.
Again...PLEASE get those sugars under control...this is your LIFE you are risking...can you say C-O-M-A?
Sorry...but it concerns me greatly.
Cathy
PS~ I "weaned" myself off of caffeine prior to surgery...I'd highly recommend that too!

I'm started the no diet dr pepper thing yesterday and switched to water. I can have coffee, which is my saving grace.
I am literally a crab!!! I totally miss my DDP!!!
But I'll get through this....my poor dh may not, but I will LOL
oh, and stress...it's been a smidge high too. Yesterday we put in a bid on a house, they accepted and we close in 30 days....
happy happy joy joy

Back to the "last supper" syndrome topic at hand...
I haven't felt the need to binge at all. I guess my mind is already set for post-op. I'm not required to do the liquid pre-diet, but I do have to abstain from alcohol. I did "celebrate" my new life the night before the alcohol ban went into effect by having champagne with my husband.
Other than that, I'm eating normally -- last night I made deep-dish pizza and had only one piece. I don't really enjoy eating at restaurants, so I don't have to do the "farewell to McDonald's" or whatever, so that's good.

Mom, I'm really glad that u took your metformin today.
Before I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1996, I would get frequent UTI's and all of the time yeast infections. I haven't had one since I began treatment for the diabetes.

My surgery date is 3 weeks from today and I am in the final push to lose the required amount of weight. My doc requires 10% weight loss before surgery, or they'll cancel. I think I have to have it done by my pre-op appt on May 8. So that's less than 3 weeks. I think I'm down 20-25 of my 30 lbs I need to lose, so I'm close. But I'm getting nervous too.
I am NOT excited about starting the optifast diet this week. The hardest thing will be the temptation that the food in the house presents. My family will be eating as normal, but I won't be able to.
I just have to keep telling myself that it's worth it.

i'm not wagging any fingers to ya "mom" except stay on your medicines so that they wont cancel surgery.
One of the reasons i chose GBS over band is because i have NO will power. Even on my 7 day liquid diet i could not help myself and cheated a few times (more than a few) but when it came to a "last supper" i admit that i wanted this surgery so badly that i passed on a "last supper" just to prove to myself that i'm committed to this. Even my doctor says dont do it. its not worth it. You've eaten yourself with "last suppers" into a morbidly obese person why do you want one more?
i hope your medicine hurrys up and gets your sugars under control

I did! I was really good on my pre-op diet, and lost 15 lbs. But two weeks before surgery I wasn't so good, but not too bad either. The weekend before surgery hubby and I took a trip and had a great time. I would splurge once a day on something special, and try to be good the rest of the day. I also had a couple of margaritas. My doc told me to go, have fun, and enjoy, but please don't come back weighing more - and I didn't! I was so nervous that if I did come back weighing more, he wouldn't do my surgery so I tried to stay on track somewhat.

Okay, I admit that I have been far from perfect, but I have lost 19 lbs on my pre-op diet so far. That being said, I do plan on going to the Chinese buffet one last time.
But...just a small warning to everyone. There's a member on here who had her surgery held up because she GAINED weight during the pre-op period. I'm not sure of her status as of right now, but she was trying to lose the weight so she could have surgery. So, be careful with those "last suppers".
