surgery might be canceled
I went yesterday for my pat's. Everything went well. Until i got about 2 hours down the highway and got a call. my blood work showed my thyroid is at 13 it has to be at least an 8 before they will do the surgery. They put me on synthroid right away. i have to get blood work done again on the 17th. My surgery is set for the 21st. I am worried now that this will cause me not to get the surgery. my nurse said that it should not be a problem, that it will go down. Is there anyone out there with this same situation.

Robert, I'm sorry to hear about the thyroid. I don't have experience with this particular problem, but I did have my first scheduled WLS cancelled less than two weeks before surgery. It was a horrible let-down for me, but ended up being for the best, and I'm now SO GLAD it happened that way. I hope your surgery goes forward on the 21st as planned, but if it doesn't, I think things will work out for you as they're meant to, and someday, you'll look back and say "Ahhh, that's why things went the way thay did..."

Sorry to hear about your thyroid issues, but think positive. I know in most cases that surgeons will do whatever it takes to keep your date, especially this close. As Eric said, if it doesn't happen, it was for a reason. I had to wait four months after approval, but looking back, so many other things fell into place and my surgery happened at the exact right time.

Sorry to tell you this but my surgery has been cancelled twice due to uncontrolled thyroid. They will not operate if the thyroid is not controlled because this can cause problems. As far as I know synthroid takes 3 months to fully work so hopefully its a fluke and when they re test you will be fine.
GOod luck

I have not had gastric bypass surgery but I do take synthroid for hypothyroidism. You will feel so much better when you get back into normal range and when you do have your surgery, this will help your metabolism. I am suprised that you can even make it out of bed at a level of 13!

I know it probably feels like a major roadblock but you have to remember that your surgeon just wants to have you going into surgery as healthy as possible.
I didn't have problems with my thyroid level but I did with my cholesterol and A1C. I had to get both of them down before my surgeon would even schedule my surgery. It took me an additional 4 months before the surgery was finally scheduled and then 2 months of additional waiting. No, I didn't like that I had to wait but I knew my surgeon had my best interest at heart. He wanted to be able to do the surgery as safely as possible...which is also what I wanted for myself.
