Default Diabetes

My wife is just now looking into this surgery. I was wondering if anyone had diabetes before the surgery and if it cured the diabetes post op.

thanks to everyone.

I had diabetes for years prior to weight-loss surgery and it was well controlled with oral meds. I left the hospital without any diabetic meds at all!
Had initial readings of 138, at 2-weeks post op it was 117, 1-month post-op my readings were totally normal...fasting ~ 93, A1C ~ 94!!!

Amazing!!! But check with her surgeon, they can give you an idea from her past history whether she'll need medication post-op for diabetes.

Good luck to both you and your wife!

Cathy

I was on three oral meds for Type 2 (Metformin, Glipizide and Avandia) prior to surgery. Two days after I got home, everything was completely normal. I had a checkup with my diabetes specialist and he said "we don't fully understand why this happens with gastric bypass, but it does in about 80% of patients"

Now I am on ZERO meds for the first time that I can remember as an adult. Man, what a feeling!

I was a newly diagnosed diabetic when I had my surgery. My sugars were completely out of control. I haven't had a high blood sugar since the surgery, my A1C is on the low side of normal, and I no longer take any sort of diabetes medication.

I went in to the hospital on oral meds.. glymperide (sp?).. and came out on insulin. The night after my surgery, the BG level was up over 375, and they started me on fast acting insulin throughout the day, as well as the slow acting insulin once daily.

I had to learn how to give myself insulin shots before they released me from the hospital- not at all difficult.. *far* easier than I expected, and actually the damn finger prick for the testing stings more than the needle for the insulin.

What I didn't know till recently is that the insulin is the reason/cause of my slower than we expected weight loss.

The numbers have been traveling lower (in the 90 to 130 range) and it appears that I may be off of the insulin in the coming weeks.. which will be awesome.

For me, even if I ended up on insulin the rest of my life, I would *still* be glad I did this.. there are so many other reasons for me to have done this.
