Unhappy Postponed Surgery

I was a week away from my surgery and went to the Dr.'s for my pre-op weigh-in/etc. I had already done all of my pre-op testing the week before and my family Dr. gave medical clearance. They weighed me in and found that I had gained back weight (10pds) since the last appointment in Oct. The RN called my doctor who decided to cancel the surgery due to risks associated with the weight gain (liver size increase primarily). Needless to say I was distraught and very disappointed in myself. The RN did apologize and said they should have had me in more often and had gone too long without seeing me, especially with the holidays/winter, etc. In the end, it was for the best because I became sick for the next week and a half anyway. So they gave me another appointment in a month and want me to lose as much weight as I can. At that point they will decide if we can reschedule or need to lose more....

So I am working my butt off (hopefully ten or twenty pounds of it)! I need some good thoughts sent my way. Two weeks until weigh in and then hopefully a new surgery date! I think all of my anxiety that I had before has now turned to frustration instead. I know things happen for a reason.....but, it would have been nice if this wasn't another obstacle!

oh, what a disappointment! do they have you on a special pre-op diet at all? I had to do two weeks of protein shakes and bars... it wasn't too bad, and I did lose 10 pounds.

I'm sorry this has happened sweetheart but it really is for your own safety. I remember watching Big Medicine where they showed that they had to lift the liver out of the way to do surgery on the stomach .......shudder!

You can do this. Focus on the end goal - truthfully, it's worth it.

Deborah - I was a little lighter at my heaviest than livnlife - 259.5lb - I'm 5'5". But my surgeon was emphatic about losing 10lb-15lb pre-surgery.

I carried a lot of weight on my stomach apparently.

Default Wow that stinks !

I'm scheduled for 3/24 and have been struggling to lose before the date. You just gave me the inspiration focus a little more.
I wish you lots of luck getting a new date ASAP.

Keep your eye on what is important and stay in the game. Every time temptation rears it's ugly head, remind yourself what's at stake. I'm so sorry you had to learn this the hard way. I think many of our doc's offices put 'the big fear' on us.

My doctor has had me on south beach. I obviously was not as strict with it as I needed to be. They have never mentioned putting me on a liquid diet, although I have heard so many people say they have done this. What protein shakes and how many per day would you recommend? I am working out like crazy and back to the beginning of the south beach diet with no carbs/sugars. I would prefer to do a liquid diet at this point to make sure I lose enough, especially with only two weeks until re-weigh-in. Any recommendations for the liquid diet?
Sara
Thanks for the well wishes!

A couple of easy things to do, to start you off. Get yourself some vanilla protein powder (vitamin store, even the grocery store), and mix it up with Carnation Instant Breakfast and skim milk. Excellent (all flavors of CIB are good).

You can do that with Sugar Free puddings - add the protein powder. It will help you lose weight.

The reason for the liquid diet that most of us were required to have is that it shrinks the liver and makes the surgery less risky. It's a good way to emotionally embrace what you are about to do.

Also, things DO happen for a reason, and I'm a strong believer (from my own experience) that getting emotionally ready for this (focus on other things than food) is one of the necessities for success. I'm 10+ months out, and I am so grateful for t hose early days pre-op (regarding food intake).

The best of luck to you! You can do this!
