Default How long should I expect to be out of work?

Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since my last post. Just been really busy. I am on track and only have to attend one more support group meeting before my surgeon's office will send my paperwork to my insurance company. I am feeling that at this rate, I will have my surgery around April or May. So I was just thinking about work....I don't know how long I should expect to be out of work after having the surgery. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Judy

Hi Judy

I was out of work for 3 weeks and then had to take it pretty easy for a week after that. I probably physically could have gone back after 2 weeks but just not emotionally.

Hmmm....I'm getting Lap RNY, and like you am hoping for an april/may cut me up date....my surgeon( who is very cautious as well as a tad superstitious) has quoted me a 6-8 week recovery.
Actually for me this works....short term disability doesnt kick in unless its at least 4 weeks anyway.....and it keeps me from losing my vaca and sick time.

It varies so much. I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery and feel as if I could return to work...PART-TIME anyways. But I'm on the fence about when exactly to return. If I go back part-time then my disability may be delayed due to the fact that they have to verify with the university on the hours I've work that period, blah, blah, blah...

My initial plan was 6 weeks total...but still not too sure! LOL

Hi Judy,
I haven't had my surgery yet, but my surgeon told me to expect to be out of work for 2 weeks. If I had a job where I needed to lift 15 lbs or more, he said 3 weeks.

Hope this helps!

It depends a lot on what type of work you do. My surgeon would have let me go back 2 weeks after surgery but he left it up to me to say when I felt I was ready. I'm a nurse in a critical care unit so needless to say I do a lot of lifting of patients. I took 4 weeks and I'm glad that I did. I may have been able to pull myself through a shift earlier but the extra 2 weeks gave me the time to adjust to trying to get back on some solid food before I went back to work.
