It's hard when other's say things like that. Do know that you could die....but there has been MAJOR improvements (i.e. laproscopic, increased knowlege, etc) from many years ago. If you're coming into this surgery thinking "Hey, this is a quick fix" you'll be sorry, but if you've researched and really thought about the life altering changes and KNEW that you are willing to change your lifestyle...then more power to you!
I'm only 2 weeks out and it has amazed me how my mind has already changed...I get hungry, but I don't THINK about food 24/7...I control food...it doesn't control me! Yeah, I realize that things may change as time goes by, but I feel so empowered by my decision...that I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
Sorry to go on, but only you know if it's the right decision for you. Another way to look at it is...would your kids want a chubby mom for 10-15 more years or a thinner, healthier mom 30 years?

Yep! I too got negative feedback from fellow employees. They didn't even know what kind of surgery I wanted to get. They just got on the topic one day because of a radio show discussion. One fellow said that people exchange addictions and it happens all the time. An exchange from food to alcahol or drugs or sex. I just listened and tried to understand what they heard and did my own research. Yes, you can die from complications. You can blead and you can suffer. You also can die from obesity and complications ect. You can exchange addictions but if you are awaire of them you have a measure of control. I'm trying to get into a routine of eating and drinking and vitamins and exercise while I'm in my honey moon stage. When my hunger returns I will have changed my lifestyle and I'll be prepaired. I am awaire of addictions and I have to maintain control. When I have desires to drink or sexual I have to think about why I am wanting such things and not surcome to them and find solutions. It's a mental game right now and it's up to me.
Listen to everyone's comments, good, bad and ugly. People do care and some are just uninformed. Surgereons have come a long way and if your surgeon is experienced you should be fine. Life is a risk, it's how you prepair for them. Do alot of research on the internet. Read up on your doctor, ask alot of question here on TT. Use the search feature and learn where others have been and what to expect. It helps alot and will help you to make a good decision that's right for you. You only get one life you choose how you want to live it.

I am still pre-op, but I feel for you. I am so blessed to have so many friends and co-workers that think what I am doing is great. I have gotten the most negativity from my family members. My dad in particular! I won't even talk to him about my decision any more. You know what the worst part is, I can't share my daily victories with him either. So, I know when I have the surgery and start losing the weight, he won't share in my elation!
Good luck to you, and congratulations on your approval. Hopefully in a few months, I will be sharing my approval date!!!!

Congrats on the approval and yes there will always be someone in the crowd that is going to have a negative opinion about wls. Just remember all the reasons why you chose to do this.

I had planned on 6 weeks off work...but am already going a little stir crazy at only 2 weeks out! Yikes! I have my 2-week post-op appointment Thursday and will discuss with the doctor about going back PART-TIME within a few weeks!

When I told people I simply said I HAD MADE A DECISION, AND I HOPE YOU WILL SUPPORT ME. <big smile> Nobody said a word. I didn't open myself up to any stupid stoies and opinions that are not based on facts.
Best of luck to you!!!!!
