Yep, 6 month supervised diet is pretty standard these days... also, if you can’t afford it, think long and hard about this step. Check and see how much the vitamins will cost you per month…forever.

Vitamins! The calcium citrate is killing me (Citracal Creamy Bites - 3 boxes a month. That's just under $23.00 )

reply and some updating
I called one of the "big" hospitals here in Boston that had a program and that’s exactly what they told me. I would have to pay $500 to get things going. I don’t make enough either for such an expense. But with my regular hospital which is still big but doesn’t have such a well known program, the six month diet program is completely covered with my insurance.
I’ve been in a diet program for more than six months and every time I see the dietician, it’s like he still asks me the same questions. I lost and gain some weight back on the program I did well when I was on appetite suppressant meds but since they were meant for short term use and as soon as I got off of the pills I started to gain some weight back. I don’t see the weight loss program moving forward to have me meet with the weight loss surgery.
I did some investigating and talked with someone from the surgeon's office. She told me I should have my primary care give me a referral to the surgeon, not the dietician. Well, my primary care was under the impression that I was to get referral from the dietician at the weight loss program. The surgeon’s office said "no”, have my own doctor give the referral.
So, I am to meet with my doctor and again express to her that I need a referral for weight loss surgery. Hopefully when I meet with them they don’t have a separate program that I would have to do for another six months. But if I do meet with a surgeon and they tell me to lose XXX amount of weight before they could move forward I will.
The diet I was on with the weight loss program was hopeless. I wasn’t sure what they wanted me to do. What was the goal, lose weight. Well, of course, I did that and then when I lost weight it’s like nothing... didn't know where I was supposed to go from there.
I’ve since left that program and will meet with my primary care doctor to give me the referral and do whatever the surgeon and his staff tell me to do. Hopefully they have a more structured program with specific results and tasks for me to do on my own.

Yep, some insurance companies require lots of stuff. Someone on here had to do 12 months of a supervised diet! Personally, my program fee is $1500, and I had to do the six months of the supervised diet. Since you can't appeal the requirements, your choice is to do the diet and pay, or forget about it. For me, no contest. I dieted and paid.
Perhaps you could take on a part time job to stash back the $400.

I had a 6 month diet, a $250 consult fee and $500 post-op support fee as well as 8 classes at $40 a class and a 2 week liquid fast before surgery. My out of pocket was around $1000 when it was all done. You know what... I'd pay it again in a heartbeat! 8 months out and I've lost an anorexic Olsen twin. Definitely worth it!

Are you really commited to a new life style?
I believe you should take a look at comments and wonder if you are qualified to have surgery. The surgery is only the beginning, we all live with the fear of getting fat.
Most realize the benefits of the surgery and relish our new bodies and outlook on life.
6 months of dieting is nothing compared to maintenance after you reach your goal. It is extremely difficult to make the right food choices everyday.
Most of all it take a commitment, I believe you should thank your lucky stars that your insurance company will even consider you as a patient.
It is not the easy way to healthy body.

Hoops
This is not a big deal. No one has too much money, you know? And think of all the money you'll save of food!
I had to lose 10% of my weight before the surgeon would even talk to me. I paid $100 for the hospital co-pay and $350 for the educational sessions. This isn't free and it isn't easy. This stumbling block is just the first of many. Get used to frustration and pushing past it.
Here are your hoops, jump!

In your case where you were under a medically supervised program so recently they may be able to count that. I know at my clinic they have both medical and surgical weight loss and they said that insurances USUALLY (not always though) accepts that as a 6 month program.

this is only the beginning of the money it'll cost you. Between the 80/month on protein drinks, and 144/ every 3 months for vitamins um its not cheap but thank God 400 is only what you'll have to pay. can you work overtime
