Default What's with the extra ring in open surgery?

I've done a bunch of searches on here and i really havent seen an answer. Member after member on this forum do not even know what it is. Is that what a fobi pouch is? I do not want a lap band procedure done, as it requires maintenance and potential that i have to be opened up later on anyway. My doctor brought up that he includes a ring on bypasses. I read that if the Dr. wants a ring it's gotta be an open procedure. Can't this errode and cause problems just like a lap band? I'm so scared of surgery and want a laproscopic procedure done instead of open if i can avoid it.

hmmmm, I'm afraid I don't know anything about an extra ring. As far as I know the only surgery that utilizes a ring is the lapband. I do believe that there may be some kind of older variation that doesn't use an adjustable ring but I'm not sure about that. I would ask a lot of questions that's for sure! And yes, I would think the use of any kind of ring would have the potential problem of slippage, erosion, etc...

The idea behind the ring is to keep the anastomosis between your new pouch and the small intestine from getting larger. This site has a great visual...

Mina, Deb is right about the ring. My surgeon inserted one during my RNY, as Deb said to keep the stoma from stretching over time. The reasoning behind it is to help maintain the sense of fullness we get after eating to help lose weight and maintain the loss over time. The one he used on me a small white plastic or nylon ring -- he showed me one at my pre-surgery appointment with him.
