Surgery in 4 days, Really Nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!
:confused This is my first time posting on this site. I am just looking for someone to make me not so nervous. I absolutly could not wait for this date, now I am wondering if I'm doing the right thing. I am just scared to die I guess. I have read the chances are 1 in a 100. I just really dont want to be that one.
I have a appointement for the surgery on Tues July 31st at 9am in Iowa City,IA.
My highest weight was 330. I am 310 now after 6 months of diet and this liquid diet I am on now.

I know how you feel at it totally normal, and right now I am the wrong person to ask about doing the right thing. I am only 4 days out and like they said its not easy its hell week. But I went thru the surgery with flying colors. I woke up right? And I had 2 previous surgeries lap so mine was more difficult. I think the real challenge is when you wake up. Living life differently. that is the hard the part surgery itself for us is the easy part we are asleep. I haven't had that good of a sleep since the surgery. So you are normal everyone feels this way and just follow what they tell you to do and soon enough you will be home like meeh trying to adjust to a new life. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am 18 days out from my surgery. I never experienced hell week... so dont let that scare you. I really didnt have any "real" pain even. It was cake.
The stats you read... are not your own docs stats... did you ask him/her what their stats were? National stats mean nothing really.
Attitude, in my opinion, is key.. if you go in scared, and wondering if you are making the right decision, you are more likely to have issues following the procedure... However, if you go in calm, knowing you are doing this to SAVE your life.. and aware of all that COULD happen.. chances are good you will sail through...
No worries... Think happy, positive thoughts..
Welcome to the board.. you can find so much information here.. Keep yourself busy over the next few days reading all you can.. Best of luck for a quick, uneventful surgery, and speedy recovery! Congratulations on making one of the best decisions of your life.. (or at least FOR your life!)

Right there with you
My surgery is scheduled for the day after yours. I agree with Jen and Trina, keep thinking positively. When the nerves set in, I remind myself of all of the people I have spoken to and read about, who are so thankful that they did this and who only wish they did it sooner! Hang in there, you'll do great.

Hey Jerrod!! First of all - welcome! I know it's easy to say don't worry - but it's hard! One thing to keep in mind though is the statistics are bent a bit. If you look at all the people under age 65 the mortality rate is much lower than if you blend all ages together. The younger you are, the better. You'll do fine! Iowa City's a good place, so just take the little nap and wake up a new man! Good luck!

Stats of dieing from obesity are higher
My Doctor said that the stat of dieing from obesity are higher than the stats of dieing from the surgery.
That beings said, I was sooooo scared too! I tried to convince myself that I had followed the pre op diet exactly and that I did everything I could to make my chances better and that I was as healthy as I could be for the surgery because with each passing year I was getting more unhealthy so getting the surgery sooner rather than later was one way I could increase my survival chances
I am now 8 months post op and I haven't looked back for one second.
I hope that in some small way my words comfort you.
I am sure that you will come through with flying colors. And follow every bit of advice as closely as you can and your success will be easier and better.
All the best
Laurie

I know what you're saying about being nervous...my surgery is 8/14.. and sometimes I feel like...could I have done this on my own without suregery?...and then I think...I'm 40...and have been overweight since being a child...I guess if I could have done AND KEPT IT OFF...the key part...keeping it off...I would have...but with each passing year I only got heavier regardless of which diet I tries (and I tried many)...and even with exercise....
I've been watching "Big Medicine" on TLC...about WLS...and some other related shows and see these people who were overweight but then really ballooned in weight after 40 or 50...and who maybe held out health wise for a while but eventually, as they became heavier, they got all the bad things...diabetes, heart failure, etc.
And all of those poor people were miserable...and they left all of this burden on their children and spouses...and it becomes so humiliating to not be able to take care of yourself...and the quality of life diminishes with each weight gain...
so I guess you can focus on the risks of the surgery...or you can reframe your outlook and remember that this is going to be a new life for you...a better life...and a chance for you to take control of something you coundn't control before...yes there is a risk with any surgery...but you need to focus on the positive and realize its going to make your life sooooo much better.
Good luck to you and keep us posted on how things went.

hey, put it this way, whatever happens you win ;-)
You need to realize that this is a life choice, something u can't easily take back. You will never eat the same, be able to eat high sugars, you will be cut off, but you will have what food can never bring you, inner happiness.
