BFD,
First off
Carbonated beverages, not good after surgery, can cause pouch pain. Prior to surgery anything is fine, avoide fatty foods and red meat for the last few days before going in.
You never feel hunger pains from the unused portion of your stomach any longer.
Time off, I took the full 6 weeks at my employers insistance. Many take much less time but usually regret not staying out longer.
I don't know about a support group in Canada. You might check out ObesityHelp.com. You are always welcome here though!
Survival rate is very hihg. Our surgeons have performed several thousand procedures and have only lost 4 (I think) patients.
I don't know of any medical problem that would prevent surgery, maybe delay it awhile but that is it. I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, numerous aches & pains and a few other problems.
Good luck on your quest, welcome aboard
