Cool Barix Clinic Processes?

I am going in to the Barix Clinic in Ypsilanti, MI for my laparoscopic gastric bypass on July 26, 2007, which is this Thursday, just wondering if anyone on here has gone to through Barix in Ypsi. I am just wondering what the procedure will be on the morning of the surgery. I am to arrive at the clinic at 8 am and was told that my surgery itself should only last about two hours, seeing as I have a 'virgin belly' (one that hasn't had any surgery before).

My guess is that the surgery itself really wont get started until 9 am or slightly later, and I will be awake again by 12 noon hopefully in recovery, but I don't want to call the clinic and bother them with this silly question.

NOT a silly question, silly. This is major surgery. Ask them all the questions you need. They will be happy to help. Best of luck, see you on the losing side.

Gary, I'm not familiar with how the Barix Clinic runs the day of procedure, I'm from the other side of the state but I can tell you how things went for me. I suspect it is pretty much the same no matter where you go.

I had to arrive at 1030am. I was scheduled for noon. I checked in, signed forms, got weighed and answered a bunch of questions that the nurse had. I got in my patient gown, had the booties put on my feet to help the circulation in my legs during surgery and had a shot of Lovenox (a blood thinner). From there I was brought to the OR holding room at about 1115am. There I had my IV put in, talked to my surgeon and the anesthesiologist. I received some lovely drugs to relax me just before they brought me in the OR. The last thing I remember was rolling down the hall until I woke up in the Recovery Room. I had the Lap RNY and the surgery only took about 45 min. I believe I was in the Recovery room about 1 hour or a bit more. I don't remember much of it except the nurses asking me about my pain, nausea and making me blow on my incentive spirometer (the ball thing to help keep your lungs clear). They will also be checking your blood pressure about every 15 min. After some more nice drugs for pain and nausea I was back off in lala land until I was in my room on the Bariatric Unit.

I am a nurse and know that most hospitals do about the same thing pre-op, so I hope this helps out just a little bit. Good luck on your surgery and let us know how everything goes.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if you get a call from a nurse a few days before surgery. If they do that is an opportunity to ask how things go, otherwise just call the Clinic this week. I'm sure they will be more than happy to educate you on how the day goes. After all that is part of their job.

I had about the same process as Beth.. in at 6:30, change into the lovely gown (that was air conditioned... VERY nice).. IV put in, thigh high Ted Hose on, Heperin shot (blood thinner), happy meds to get to the OR.. then the knock out drops in the OR, and woke up in recovery 1.5 hours later... I was in recovery for 6 hours.. but thats just because they didnt have a room for me. But I was good with that.. because the recovery room was the only place that for every time I hit the pain button... the nurse could hit it two more times

Best of luck and quick healing on your big day. It really is better once you are on the other side.. it just takes a while to sink in me thinks.. Its just sinking in to me that I have had surgery and Im two weeks post..

Keep us posted on your progress!
