Unhappy Fiancee Scheduled for Surgery Next Week

Hi everyone,

My Fiancee is scheduled for surgery next Weds with Dr. Callery. It seemed like it took forever to get this approved and then suddenly its time. I'm worried about him and all the risks involved in having surgery. Of course, he is a big guy (5'10" 365) and is starting to get the health problems associated with being heavy so he needs to do this. Anyone out there in my situation that can give me some reassurance that this is the right thing. I guess I just need to hear that everything will be okay. Already lost one husband to heart disease....

Default Martee,

Yes, there is risk, but being MO has plenty of risk. Heart disease is one of them. Your Fiancee is in the best hands possible, Dr. Callery is the best! I did my research before my surgery and kept coming back to Dr. Callery. Trust in Dr. Callery's track record. Your fiancee will be just fine!

Keep us posted on his progress! All are welcome here.

I'm 5'9" was 313lbs just had surgergy monday and everyhting went well. I am at home up and about. I tend to have a positive outlook on life but even I got the jitters the night I went in but once I was there I was fine. I have no regrets and I too wanted to prevent the problems associated with being obese. I had just got gout and mild sleep apneya and wanted no more compications.

The best is right..... Dr Callery is the best gastric bypass in this state! I looked at 5 surgeon's before getting comfortable that Dr Callery was the best man for the job! Your husband is in the greatest of care.... just be attentive those aches and pains AFTER the surgery..... that's the critical time. He is going to do wonderful, we have had an amazing streak of luck on this board! Welcome!

I agree with Bridget. Doctor Callery IS the best. I did a lot of research and I found that Dr. Callery has a great track record and he is a wonderful person. He is good at what he does and he truly enjoys his job. I owe my new life to Dr. C!

Your husband will be fine and I know it is hard not to worry. Be thankful he has Dr. Callery...he is in good hands. My thought and prayers go out to you and your husband.

Martee,

I'm waiting for approval for my surgery right now. I never thought I would ever do this! But I had a very strong reason why I changed my mind. My husband.

He had his surgery with Dr. Callery in March 2004. He weighted 411 lbs and is 6'1. He had all of the co-morbidites that he could have. SEVERE sleep apnea, diabetes, high blood pressure, you name it. He was a walking time bomb.

He has lost 162 lbs. All of his co-morbidities are gone. He exercises 3-4 times a week (this from my 100% couch potato husband!). Our lives have changed in ways I cannot even express. We now do "active people" stuff. I am sure to the core that this surgery is going to give me many, many more years with my husband.

Yes, there are risks. And yes, it is NOT fun for the 1st few months. There are a lot of adjustments, both mental and physical. We had to re-establish a relationship not based on food.

But it will SO be worth it when you have a healthy, happy husband!! You have the best surgeon you could have. I wish you the best!

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now! heheh

Talking Thank you!

You are all so supportive! I needed someone to tell me its going to be okay. I have faith in Dr. Callery and his staff and I know that this surgery will add so much to my fiancee's life and to mine as well. We have a 3 year old and I want my fiancee to see him grow up and with how he is now, he may not be around that long.

Thank you so much for responding and telling me your stories. It means so much to me and I more at peace with this decision to go forward with this change. All I have to say is...I'm next!

Default Martee,

"We have a 3 year old and I want my fiancee to see him grow up and with how he is now, he may not be around that long." The best reason I can think of for this surgery is to be around for your kids and add to their/your/fiancee's quality of life! You're in good hands.

Keep us posted!
