Question Surgery on June 4 and having 2nd thoughts

Ok, I have surgery on June 4th. Finished the pre-op testing wednesday and
suddenly I am not sure. I really want this, but I do not know if I can give up my love of food. The doc has me on a liquid diet, and am already craving everything. Help it is driving me crazy.. Did any one else have these feelings before surgery? They really need to have a brain transplant at the same time.

Thumbs up

Ruth~

Just remember that you don't have the "TOOL" yet.I can ALMOST promise you that after surgery food plays such a different role in your new life. The tool helps with the hunger...your mind still acts crazy but for the first time in my life I had control.

Only you can know if this is the right choice for you~

I wish you the best either way.

Its normal to be scared. Its hard to be on liquids prior to surgery, and with the tool, your feelings towards food will change. I loved food, and I still like it, although my tastes have changed....I really don't like a lot of what I did before. I am one of the lucky ones that can eat all the foods I ate before (well of course in moderation and some I choose not to eat). You never know what cards you will be dealt in this surgery.

Make sure this is what you want...it life altering...but I personally would do it over and over again.

You need to realize that some of the fear you are experiencing now is that you are starting to mourn the loss of a friend....food. It isn't unusual to be having second doubts. I think a lot of us went through that. But like Van said, your relationship with food changes after surgery. I never thought I could do it. I failed at so many diets and I loved to eat! It was one of my best friends! Well, it's 16 months later and I have lost 200 pounds. NEVER in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would be almost to goal in only 16 months. Only you know what is the right decision for you but the nerves and the grief for the loss of your relationship for food are totally normal.

Chance, I posted on the other thread. Its a very emotional time...and don't panic.......you don't want to make any rash decisions...Really think about this. Have you done a pro/con list as to why you are wanted the surgery in the first place? put it down on paper and look at the big picture. On Monday if you feel really, really strong about it, put off the surgery...but give it a little more time before you pull out.

We are here for you.

I thought the way you did pre op. But then I realized if I didn't change my attitude towards food, all diets would fail and I would continue to become more sedentary, fatter, and my health would decline even more rapidly.

I love food. I love cooking. All of the tastes change after surgery and after one month of eating, your eyes are reprogrammed to match the size of your pouch. Before I would look at 4 ounces of fish and say "thats all"? Now I look at it and say "I can't finish that"? It is the same delicious food (my problem was portion control and fast food). I don't do fast food and I feel so much better for it. I cook with butter and olive oil etc. Food is wonderful, but it is now a fuel source not a crutch or emotional need. When you are only eating 4 ounces rather than a pound, you can afford to get better meats and fish.

Be ready for changes, but realize they aren't as hard to make post op with the tool than pre op. Really stick to it for the first 6-8 months and then when you are able to eat more, you will have reprogrammed your brain by then and you will have long term success.

Only you know what is right for you
