Default Liquid Diet - Constipation

Ok simple question here.

I'm 5 days out on the Liquid Diet thing and I've been following it pretty strict.
Heres my routine:

Morning - 35g Protien Shake(can)

Afternoon - Lunch is a soup with a Diet Snapple (at work)

Dinner - Soup With Propel (I liter of liquid Propel) (at home)
Sometime after dinner I'll do the second 35g Protien Shake.

I have no memory of EVER being constipated in my life. This is a bad feeling.
I'm begining to think of going and buying some 'Stool Softners', what do you guys and dolls say ?

Help

A bowel prep would do the trick.

Have this scheduled for the day before surgery

Default Had a similar problem before my recent

I was on pain pills for three weeks before my recent gall bladder surgery, and they stopped me up completely, known side effect. I had to resort to Ex-Lax extra strength about every other night after the first five days. Didn't want the bowel prep that I had to do the night before surgery to be completely traumatic (sorry, it was anyway). You might talk to your doctor's nurse or PA to see if they recommend anything during your liquid diet.

TMI, I know, but they did give me docusate (a stool softener sold as Dulcolax over the counter) and for me, it was very little help. Every gut is different, though.

I am not a doctor. I have had many bouts with stopping up over the past few years. My GI recommends Miralax it is now available over the counter. It IS NOT A STIMULANT it is very gentle on the guts.... Takes a couple days but does work. Be sure to be drinking water all day long..

Are you sure you're constipated? Because when you cut way back on your food intake, you don't NEED to poo as often.

Ditto on the water intake-- you need to be drinking LOTS and LOTS of water. Also, some moderate exercise helps move things along, too-- just some simple walking can do wonders.

Most of the time, constipation is because of too little water intake and too little exercise-- better to deal with these two issues than to go the stool softener route, which can lead to ongoing constipation problems later on (depending on what kind you use).

I deal with constipation occasionally as well. Most of the time, I make a point of water-loading for a couple of days and things "work themselves out" so to speak... I HAVE had to use a stool softener twice since surgery, but only after the "water and exercise" thing hasn't worked.

Accually, docusate is a stool softener....helps after about 2 days, it absorbs fluid from the bowel and stomach to aide the consistancy. Ducolax or bisacodyl is a laxative sold OTC as well works quickly but need to be careful cuz any laxitive can cause your body to rely on that. Miralax is now sold OTC. It is expensive but very effective and is wildly used for people with all kinds of issues.

Good luck

Warm water with lemon juice works like a charm for me.

If you feel like you HAVE to go and cant, and its painful and uncomfortable......you could use a suppository. I dont think its a good idea to use them often though, but sometimes it really helps.
