Default Quit smoking-don't gain weight!

Well that's what they told me! About a yr ago! I have tried and tried and tried to quit smoking! it is so frickin' hard! I don't smoke much, maybe 3-5 ciggs a day! and when I do I smoke a half here and there! And the whole don't gain weight! I've since put on about 15lbs! What do I do now? They are already going to ask me to lose weight before the surgery! RIGHT?
Then I was 316lbs now I'm 327.5lbs!! I should be happy because I still have time! I don't have a surgery date yet! The whole insurance thing changing slowed down things! And having to choose a new PCP and start over with her! I hope it dosn't take much longer! But sucks at the same time!

Default keep trying

I've been without cigs for about 10 months........ for me it was easier giving up the nicotine than trying to lose 5% of body weight... really, cutting back on portion size, eliminating sugar & salt are driving me off the deep end.....!!!
keep up your good efforts, we're all here for you.......!!!

Oliver Twist helped my wife, you should be able to find this in a tobacco shop. They are half or less then a chicklit (sp) come in many flavors. it gives you a little nicotine and calms your nerves. Tim

you are going to get my Chantix speil.

I smoked for 20+ years. Last november I was smoking 2 packs a day. I did not know that my surgeon was going to require me to have quit for 6 months before surgery... but I am glad I quit when I did.

My doc knew I was hell bound on quitting, and like dieting, everything I tried to quit, I smoked more. I felt like ass. So, she recommended Chantix. It is a nicotine receptor blocker. Its the miracle drug of the century. I said.. C'mon... I tried the gum, the patch, the inhaler, zyban, combinations of all those, hypnosis.... I cant quit. She said.. try it.

So.. she said I have to smoke for a week. Cool.. Doc says I HAVE to smoke. Rockin! First couple days.. I giggled every time I went out and smoked. You start out on a quarter dose, thena half, then by the end of the week you are on the full dose. The first couple days.. I was sure this wasnt going to work for me. The next couple of days.. people I smoked with at work, would come say.. "Uh.. are you going to smoke?" HELL YEs.. Im going to smoke.. Doc says I have to! By my last day smoking...(and I felt like I was smoking ALL The time..) I was smoking 2 cigs a day. My last cigerette was Nov. 10th.

It works. You have no cravings.. AT ALL. Your receptors are happy.. they think you are getting nicotine.. best part? If you smoke? You feel NO difference.. there is no major calming.. because, the only thing you are doing, is putting crap in your lungs... you arent reaping the benefits of nicotine.

So there.. my rant on Chantix. I have recommended it to either 6 or7 people here. One of them hasnt tried it yet.. ALL of the rest of them... Are non-smokers now. My insurance covered it as a top tier drug.

My mom smoked for 15 years and did accupuncture. She smoked her last cigarette in front of the clinic. She has never desired another one and hates the smell of smoke.

Goodluck!

First off, Welcome.
Second: Things are simple for you right now. You don't have a PCP, and your in the process of getting the ball rolling. You have TIME. Use it. Every surgeon requires different things, some ask for weight loss, some do NOT. Don't worry about it until it becomes an issue. For the smoking. I will try to put this in perspective for you.

My Surgeon gave me a choice, it was quite simple. Quit smoking or NO surgery. It was that simple. I could bitch, complain, rant, rave, freak....and so forth, but it came down to the fact that I either quit smoking or I wouldn't be able to have the surgery. FOR ME...this was a NO brainer and I was a smoker for 15+ years. I wanted this surgery MORE than I wanted my cigs. My Dr. was even tougher than most and required me to be off the smokes for a whole 6 months BEFORE he would schedule my Surgery. SOOOO....I quit the DAY they told me. I haven't looked back since. This is my story...and I am sure others on here can tell you similar things. Some have even started smoking again, post-op. The point is, you DO what You HAVE to do to get the End result. No matter what it is, you have to be willing to do it. It's all about getting healthy and fit....and we all know Smoking is NOT part of a healthy or fit life style.

You CAN do what it takes, anyone can!! The payoff in this case is better than just plain knowing you did the right thing. Now you can judge for yourself how willing you are to make the LIFE changes necessary for this Surgery to be a lifetime success for YOU. You know where the end of this road leads....RUN TO IT!!!

I don't smoke, but I have had two people tell me about this new laser treatment they've had done. One lady went once and hasn't smoked since (it's been about a year and a half), and the other lady went twice, same story. Both said they completely lost ALL desire to smoke.

I'm betting Jen's Chantix is cheaper and has a better shot at working though!

I was a smoker for 13 yrs...I quit 2 months ago...cold turkey...no help..just stopped because, like Zen said my surgeon said quit or NO surgery...in fact at my pre-op appointment last week he did a specific blood test to check me for nicotine...had i failed my surgery would have been canceled....i have to say...now that i am on the pre-op 14 day liquid diet...quitting food is MUCH harder then quitting smoking!!!

You mentioned things are simple, like I'm just starting all this when actually I'm at the end! I've done all the testing, blood work, consult, and the sleep apnea, all of it, Just waiting for a date! But I had to change insurance, and now need to change PCP because as of May 1st they are no longer taking My new Insurance! So Maybe this is Gods way of giving me time to quit! I just wonder how my new PCP will be! Will she keep me on disability, will she send the referals to get the ball rolling again so I can Have this surgery? Just frustrated!

Thank you for your advice!!!
