Sleep Study
Hi all,
Just hoping to get some insite into what a sleep study entails. Because I'm tired all the time, the surgeon wants to rule out sleep apnea and has ordered a sleep study.
I understand that I have to spend the night but that's about it.
What happens?
What if I don't sleep because it's a strange place?
I'm a worrier by nature and this gives me a whole new thing to worry about!
Thanks guys,

I had a sleep study at the end of last year. When I got there they put me in my room...It was nice, like a hotel room. I wore comfy clothes (sweat pants) some do wear pj's I didn't. Then they come in and hook you up to what feels like hundreds of wires. They put yucky gel in your hair to get wires to stick etc...then you lay down and try to fall asleep.
The bad part is once they determine you have a sleep disorder YOU have to go back and spend the night again...this time to decide which equipment works best for you!
Good luck

I had a sleep study done on January 31st, 2007 I had to get all hooked up to the wires, then they made me sleep on my back ...which i NEVER do...but since I take sleeping pills every night before bed..they allowed me to take my sleeping pills...then they monitored me for a few hours and by 2am they had determined that I had sleep apnea so they came in and hooked me up to the machine right then and there...by 6 am they were done, i met with a guy and went home with my machine...I am sure every place does it a little differently. I would just call your place and ask for a run down of how its going to happen.

How sad is it that I never even thought of that! Just immediately started worrying and knew that you all would know. Thanks!
Also, thanks Leesa, for a peek into what to expect!

If its been ordered as a split study half the night they will do it without a device and if deemed neccessary the next half with a device on. You CAN take medication to help you sleep if its pre-approved. I have a hard time falling asleep in different places so my PCP checked with the sleep doc and he prescribed me one ambien.

I did mine at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. No big deal really - sleeping with wires attached to you is annoying ... and I swear I didn't sleep much - but they claim the study showed sleep apnea.

Im with you. I took the ambien too soon and by the time it was lights out I was up. I tossed and turned for honestly the longest ammount of time I ever had, felt like I didnt sleep at all. Apparently they had enough though. Came back as severe sleep apnea. Now 5 months after surgery and im completely free of it.

My script does say "split night". So that means that I'll have all of the wires hooked up to me all night but they'll only set me up w/ a correction device if they see evidence of sleep apnea?
Did they make you sleep on your back? (I CAN'T sleep on my back.)
Did any of you go into the test thinking you had sleep apnea? I really don't think that I do and will be shocked if they find that I do...wouldn't my husband be picking up on it?
Ugh...I'm more nervous about the silly sleep test than I am the potential for surgery! I'm like a little kid, I don't like sleeping at someone else's house!
