Yes thanks so much for this awesome post! As someone who is just starting the process I appreciate everything I am finding out here...especially the posts that make me think about the bad AND the good of this surgery. Y'all are keeping my feet on the ground & I appreciate it so very much.

This was perfect for me timing wise! Thank you! It is so helpful to me to see real life stories of what it was/is like. Thanks for compiling this! I hope more people will post their experiences too!

Thumbs up Thanks Lisa!!

I remember clearly when I started reading all the posts, feeling quite overwhelmed (only momentarily) by all the information available on this Forum, and I think it might be a good idea to welcome all the newbies with a reply that include links to all these kind of threads that are so important to the pre-opps like me - I'll take it on myself to get a standard reply ready for the newbies, to welcome them with, with some threads that I found useful and I should appreciate it if anybody else, that knows of any other threads that might be important, could let me know so that I can add them.

I know it sounds silly but I wish I would have known just how chapped my lips were going to be! I also was not prepared for thinking "WHAT have I done to myself....... I must be stupid and crazy!!!!" It only lasted a day or two but I had no idea that others had this same thought! I felt as if I made a mistake and got extremely depressed. Even the next dat I didn't feel that way I was excited for my journey! Great question!

Thumbs up

wow this was great reading, thank you so much for taking the time to do this for all of us,,,i am just over a month away from my surgery and wonder all the time many of these things and still have so many questions on my mind,,,,
everyday i come up with more,,,,and more,,,,,,this journey is exciting, scarey and mostly educational,,,,i pray all the time that i will do well with all the studying i am doing and research into this surgery and new way of life,,,i read the stories here, see the emotions and see the amazing pics of everyone and get inspired and realize that there is such graeat support here,,,,i feel sooo happy to have stumbled onto this site! my latest wonder is how the ruen y bypass,,(spelling??) i read that sugars and fats are not tolerated well after surgery...is that true? to what extent? like i love fruit and sometimes my days are nutso so i have to grab some chicken nuggets once in a blue moon,,,am i going to get sick from that?? if i have a nutso day will i still have that convenience or do i need to start carrying maybe cheese sticks with me or a little bag of carrots or something,?? sounds silly but i want to avoid "dumping or throwing up" i am reading and learning that i must eat ,,,,,,and will need to do suppliments to stay healthy,,,what is better liquid or pill form,,,,,,also how do you keep the protein intake inline with what you are supposed to? food types after surgery, what can be tolerated the best?? why are some people using protein powders?? to substitute??

i have a million of them,,,,,ha hah ha,,,,but this site by far is my best resource,,,my last nutritionally supervised appt is next monday and i will be asking more questions then,,,,that poor nutritionist?? i must sound like a 3 yr old kid in the "why?" phase....ha ha haha

this month has been the hardest,,,supposed to have no sugar and 1100 calories a day,,,,,that has been a bit tough,,,had sugar 3 times this last month,,but human i guess,,,,i am learning not to beat myself up over slip ups....human,,,remember we are all human,,,,,i keep telling myself!

hugs to all
mechelle

Everyone who has the surgery varies on what and how much they can tolerate of either sugars or fats. For me, most days of late (even at two years out) I can only tolerate about five grams of sugar. I have no problems tolerating fat, so I have to be even more careful to stay away from fried foods, as they WON'T make me sick.

like i love fruit and sometimes my days are nutso so i have to grab some chicken nuggets once in a blue moon,,,am i going to get sick from that?? You won't know until you try--sorry. And if I were you, I wouldn't try--there's convenience, and then there's regaining the weight. Which one's more important?

if i have a nutso day will i still have that convenience or do i need to start carrying maybe cheese sticks with me or a little bag of carrots or something,?? See above answer. Carry the cheese sticks. You won't be able to eat carrots for quite a while. I still can't.

sounds silly but i want to avoid "dumping or throwing up" At some point, you will end up either dumping or throwing up or both. You just need to figure out what you dumped on or what made you sick so you can avoid it for a while. This is why we suggest only adding one new food a day, so troublemaking foods are easy to identify. And, for most of us, throwing up is not nearly as traumatic as it was pre-op. No acid post-op.

i am reading and learning that i must eat ,,,,,,and will need to do suppliments to stay healthy,,,what is better liquid or pill form,,,,,, Liquid to begin with, but you should be able to take pills after a certain period of time - your doctor will tell you when.

also how do you keep the protein intake inline with what you are supposed to? Some people use protein supplements like shakes, some people use bars, some people get all their protein from food. Everyone differs--it will just be a matter of what you can tolerate.

food types after surgery, what can be tolerated the best?? Again (sorry) everyone differs.

why are some people using protein powders?? to substitute?? Yes, because they can't get all the protein they need from food alone.

i have a million of them,,,,,ha hah ha,,,,but this site by far is my best resource,,,my last nutritionally supervised appt is next monday and i will be asking more questions then,,,,that poor nutritionist?? i must sound like a 3 yr old kid in the "why?" phase....ha ha haha Take this list of questions in and ask your nutritionist - he/she may have answers that are specific to your doctor.
this month has been the hardest,,,supposed to have no sugar and 1100 calories a day,,,,,that has been a bit tough,,,had sugar 3 times this last month,,but human i guess,,,,i am learning not to beat myself up over slip ups....human,,,remember we are all human,,,,,i keep telling myself!
