Back pain question, help??
I keep reading about how the surgery position can result in back pain. Has any one experienced that? How severe and how long does it last? I inquire because one of the main reasons I am having this surgery is because of a history of back injuries, etc. The thought of more back pain is , well, how can I say it?? YUCKKKYYY!!

I just read some posts about that on Obesity help and got scared. That is also my main reason for having this surgery and it seems that most of the comments about back pain is about it worsening, not improving. I don't know what to think, I know it has to do with the way your weight effects the possition of your spine and how it adjusts to carry your weight (less of it) differently. I saw it posted that a chiropractor will help so I am going to be all over that plus continue all the exercizes and stretches I have form physical rehab.......it is so scary to think it may get worse
If you find out anything please pass it along.

Hmmmm
I've never heard of back pain worsening. In fact, my back pain, knee pain, etc. has totally disappeared. It may be caused by your guts being tossed around. I dunno. Maybe some of the others can answer better. However, I think everyone is different and will react and heal differently. Regardless, this is still the best thing I have ever done for myself and my health.
Good luck!!!

Back Problems
I always had back troubles and when I woke up from surgery, I had SEVERE back pain. It was from laying on the table flat on my back. They gave me Valium to help and it did. I still have back pain, but not Severe. I think it is from my weight shifting around..

Me...
Being almost 70 pounds down, my back pain no longer requires me to take 1600 mg of Ibuprofin a day and my knee pain is significantly reduced. That's been my experience. I know everyone is different, it's one of the things that you should be evaluating and getting more educated on prior to surgery.
I wish you nothing but a good outcome and back pain relief.

I have some minor back pain now after 90lbs lost. My joints feel looser and are constantly popping back in place. You skeleton does have to readjust, just as it did with weight gain. I just keep up with my strenghtening and strecthing exercises to keep my muscles tight to prevent any injuries while my body puts itself back together.

I had severe back pain before my surgery. It is very rare now that I have a problem and that usually comes after overdoing something. It has been an amazing change for me to go from constant, chronic pain to being free from it. I wish you well.

The back pain
The increase in pain immediaely following surgery may happen, but only lasts for a couple of days. The reason being, through the pre op part and surgical part of your procedure you are flat on your back for at least 4 hours, 2-3 of those hours are in an unconcious state (under anthesesia) because of how big our butts can be, you may lay funny and put pressure on your back while laying there for so long..... I have no behind, never did so I didnt come out of surgery with back pain at all. Thats why some folks experience mild back pain the first few days out of surgery. I hope I cleared that up for ya Rain... best wishes sugar pea!

Back Pain
I have something to say on this subject for sure. A couple of years before I had surgery I had broken my back and had a lot of pain from that accident since. I found it hard to lay on my back while sleeping, and even laying on my sides was very difficult because it would effect the position of my spine and put pressure on my hips.. immediately after surgery I was miserable.. I had open RNY and my incision didn't hurt but my back was killing me.. worse than when I broke it. Finally some of the gals that had surgery before me came in and told my nurse to get me some.. (write this down) TORIDOL. That was my life saver.. they gave me that and a valium and I was good to go. I had the nurse get that for DaleM as well when she was in ICU because she was miserable. I then went into emergency surgery the next day and had to be put under and lay on the table one more time.. so I requested the Toridol keep coming and it did. That was my life sver. Since I had open, I figured I had to walk like a hunch back after surgery until Dr. Callery told me he didn't suture me up like that and I needed to straighten out my posture. After I started doing that, my back pain subsided. I can finally say that after 4 years and 118 less pounds on my body that I no longer have severe back pain. I get it from time to time from possible arthritis that settled in there from the fracture, but other than that, I am so much more pain free than I have been in years. I also rarely have rheumatoid arthritis flare ups which is very welcoming as well. Good luck to you and don't worry they have stuff to help your back in the beginning after surgery.. and I feel that you will feel much better after you start losing weight.
I know I did.
