Pre-op liquid diet, Day 3
Okay, Day 3 of the pre-op liquid diet and NSA CIB is getting OLD...
I went out shopping with my husband today and we stopped at Quizno's (since we'd been out for 3 hours at that point and he was starving). The only thing on the menu that looked even REMOTELY close to something I could have was the chicken noodle soup, which I had a cup of, plus a bottle of water. (Bad me-- I ate the broth, AND the chicken, noodles, and veggies.)
So now I feel like I'm going to hell for "breaking" the liquid diet.
Oye, this is going to be a long week... I find myself fantasizing for week 2 post-op, when I can legitimately have soup again (albeit pureed)... and blessed Week 3, when I can actually have an EGG and HUMMUS, woohoo!
Aside from my chicken noodle soup infraction, I've kept to NSA CIB, beef and chicken broth, and SF jello... does anyone have any other suggestions for stuff I can eat in this phase? I'm getting seriously sick of sweet-tasting stuff and just wish I could have something savory instead, besides beef or chicken broth.

I found that once I started food again, it was such a difficult learning process that I wished I didn't have to eat at all!
SF Popsicles, though they are sweet. Water things down? My husband is a chef and made me a tomato consume that helped me out a lot. It isn't the easiest dish to prepare, but maybe theres a rest. nearby that would make you one?
If you are tempted by nasty things like noodles and veggies in the future, just ask your husband to throw whatever it is you know you don't want to eat, away. I still ask my husband to throw things away. As I mentioned, he's a chef and once in a while I have to say - DH, I can't clean up this dinner because I'm going to eat leftovers until I barf. He doesn't mind taking over to help me out.
For later, in restaurants it is also possible to get a "leftovers" container with your meal, put in what you know you shouldn't eat and then have only your good healthy meal on your plate. Like - I can have one soft taco at this point with some tomatoes and lettuce, but that cheese and sour cream is too tempting. I get rid of it as soon as it comes out. The salsa is all I need!
Anyway - just kick yourself in the booty and realize that you can do this for two lousy weeks. Take it one day at a time and keep your eye on the prize! Your health is the bottom line here. Many folks have survived this stage - and you will too!!

You're doing great! Hang in there, and look forward to when you can haved full liquids again. Don't kick yourself over the chicken noodle soup. You're making better choices already. Celebrate that!

No worries about falling off the pre-op plan, just get back on. I agree with Gina, it was much easier after the surgery, I didn't want to eat, but made myself get it in.
Have you tried protein drinks at all. They really help fill you up and give you protein.
Cream soups were good - try a variety of canned or make your own. I lived off this for the first 2 weeks.

I don't think I'm allowed any cream soups at this point, which doesn't make much sense to me since I'm supposed to be doing the CIB with milk... We're recommended to do 6 NSA CIB packets per day, with 8 oz. skim or 1% milk with each packet... so I've been doubling them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus a couple of SF jellos thrown in here and there, and some beef broth in the evening. Total protein from the CIB is 71g/day, and about 900 calories, so nutritionally it's OK.
Being HUNGRY isn't the problem; in fact, I find myself having to remind myself to drink them. It's the BOREDOM that's getting to me, and the constant barrage of "sweet" stuff... I'm beginning to realize that before this whole WLS journey, I never really craved "sweets" nearly as much as I did the savory stuff... and now I feel like I'm being ambushed by sugar-- even though it's fake sugar.
I keep trying to remind myself that it's only another week and a half until I'm a week post-op and I can start transitioning back to "normal" foods, like eggs, pureed soups, etc.

You are doing great on the pre-op diet. I did well week#1...but the end of week#2....I snapped....went to Delitown and got a big fat sandwich! Turkeyw/swiss/cranberry sauce/lettuce/tomato/etc. etc. on Dutch crunch bread!! Oh my goodness...it was heaven. I felt very guilty about it, but still lost 14 pounds in the 2 weeks, and went into surgery weighing 230. I had some problems after surgery (unrelated to the big sandwich..lol) and there were times when I was laying in that hospital bed vomiting....and I looked back fondly on that sandwich and it made me feel better. How sick and twisted is that? I'm just so glad all is well now, and I am able to eat a small amount and be satisfied...it's a feeling I've never had. You will love it! My point to the story...is don't beat yourself up over chicken noodle soup....there's always someone who's blown it worse....her name is Elaine!

Haha Elaine... thanks!
Every time my husband cooks for himself now (this morning it was pancakes, swimming in butter and syrup), the smell covers the entire house and it just drives me insane. He's being as good about it as can probably be expected-- he doesn't talk about food, he eats in the kitchen (at the other end of the house from me, etc. but the smell... MY GOSH the smell. Ugh!

It's hard with the good food smells. Even now! The other night my husband was having a pork roast...apple bourbon pork roast.....the smell got to me. I took a piece.....chewed it just to get the flavor, which was out of this world by the way, then I spit it out!!!! Gross? Perhaps...but it was really good!

You know, I was actually PREPARING to do the occasional "chew and spit" post-op if I just HAD to have a taste of something--- until I watched a documentary on HBO a few weeks ago about anorexia-- it seems the "chew and spit" is a common anorexic behavior.
That kind-of weirded me out... after listening to anorexics talk about it, I don't think I'll be able to do it.

pre-op diet
Good evening all,
I am also new here. Dont have a surgery date as of yet,but do know that my insurance has approved. yahooooo! Got the message on the message machine this evening. What I did not know is that I will be going on a liquid diet prior to surgery.I am having a real hard time losing the wt. prior to my sugery, that I believe will be at the beginning of Jan. I hope they dont refuse to do the surgery because of this. Its a real big fear at this point. I am not losing at all ! Any insight on this, maybe I should go in the liquid diet on my own hehe
