Approooooooved!!!!!!!!!!!
I had my surgeon consult last Tuesday, scheduled surgery for December 8th, so the next step after the consult was for the program to submit all my stuff to my insurance... I figured I'd give them a week before checking in, but I couldn't wait until tomorrow so I broke down and called this afternoon...
ME: "Hi, I had my consult last Tuesday with Dr. Shope, I was wondering where I stand in the insurance approval process, and I was told that you're the person that handles this."
HER: "Yep, I'm the one that submits everything, and... let me see, i was just working on yours this morning... Yep, it looks like you're approved and ready to go."
ME: "What?! Are you kidding me?! It's only been a week; I didn't even know you SUBMITTED it yet!!"
HER: (chuckles) "I know, I was suprised it was so fast, too."
ME: "So really, it was approved? That's it, I don't need to do anything else? Seriously??"
HER: "No, it's all taken care of, you just need to let me know if your insurance is going to change on January 1st because then we need to re-submit it."
ME: "No, it's not changing." (dumbfounded babbling) "I just can't believe that's it, they approved it just like that."
HER: "Yep, you're all set. Good luck with your surgery!"
Methinks the poor woman must have thought I was trying to convince her they HADN"T approved me, heehee...
So it's official... I AM APPROVED AND READY TO GO IN 5 WEEKS AND 4 DAYS!!!!
I'M SO EXCITED I CAN HARDLY STAND IT!!!!!!!!!

That's amazing news. Congrats!
I wish I knew someone from Oklahoma who has my insurance--I'd like to know how smooth/bumpy their approval process is.

Pam,
Try going onto obesityhelp.com; you can access info for your particular state, and there's a spot where you can check posts from others on different insurance providers... people post reviews on how smoothly (or not) things went with their insurance, so there's a good chance your insurance might be listed.

Thanks, I checked it out and it looks like it's still a gamble. It seems the employer has to opt into that portion of the insurance for it to be covered--and then people are still having to appeal. . .
I don't know whether to contact the insurance person in my school system or not--I don't know her well and was really not planning on making this public knowledge (at least not right now).

What about calling customer service for your insurance (you know, the toll-free number on the back of the card)? With your ID number, they should be able to pull up your benefits plan and tell you whether or not your employer has an exclusion.
