Shopping List for First Few Weeks Post-Op?
I'm having my WLS surgery (laparoscopically) on 9/27/06 and want to go to the grocery store beforehand and get whatever liquid diet items I'll need post-op. My doctor gave me several samples of protein supplements for drinks, sorbet, etc. but I'd rather buy less expensive things (i.e., sugar-free Carnation Instant Breakfast, etc.). Would I be ok with any type of broth, sugar-free jello, pudding, etc.? What about milk? Thanks.

Don't stock up on too much stuff. You will get tired of it and all overestimate how much you really can eat. I had the following:
1-2 packs of jello
Chicken Broth
Cream Soup - potato, mushroom, asperagus - you will have to blend it or not eat the chunks
Cocoa and skim milk powder
Propel
Applesauce - small kids cups
I ate a few puddings
If you can get instant SF carnation - great
popsicles, popsicles and more popsicles - I had 8+ a day
Milk I didn't drink early out except for in the soup
I had bottled water
Crystal light - couldn't drink this until I was 4+ weeks
This was pretty much my diet for 2-3 weeks. On the 3rd week, I added in one new food a day - puree stuff.
Hope this helps.......of course always follow the guidelines of your doctor for starting new stages.....it seems each has their own timelines.

You should definitely not stock up too much on anything. You will be eating very little for the first week or two - one container of yogurt and a can of soup lasted me two days. And you may end up with stuff you just won't have a taste for anymore - my tastes in food changed a lot.
Do buy lots of popsicles and sugar free fudge-pops. I ate those like crazy and I still enjoy them.
Good luck to you.

My surgeon puts his patients on a special bariatric protein product for 2 weeks post-op so I didn't stock up on much. What I did get was sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello, decaf tea and some bottled water. That was about it, but as I said I had a special product that my doctor's office handled and I purchased it from them a week before my surgery. Sure made things a lot easier for me, that's for sure.

I am with everyone else... don't over buy! Your taste will change! I use to drink Propel every day prior to surgery and now I can't stand it. Just get one or two of each item. Another thing that came in handy was the ziplock storage containers the little bitty ones those are perfect to section your food out after you open it. Your doc should give you a list of food that he/she wants you to have. I think everyone is a little diffrent on that.

I agree with Lisa you need to get lots of SF popsicles!! I still eat them alot, I got campbals chicken noodles and strined it out cuz I could not stand broth also the veggie beef is good strinded and Jello frozen propel is good. and if you have a local taco shop you should try a bean and cheese burrito but just eat the inside but that will be after you get off the liquids but do stock up on popsicles get every flavor you can I got lucky cuz I was able to find SF 7up!!!
