I only needed to show past attempts at weight loss prior to surgery so I wasn't placed on a 6 month diet. However I was working on weight loss in the year prior to surgery on my own (mainly because I felt a need to prove to myself that I could kick the bad soda/caffeine habit I had). I lost 40 pounds during the year and at the pre-op appointment, Kelly (the nurse practioner) commented on the weight loss and asked if I felt like I still needed the surgery. My answer to this was yes, because I had lost more in the past and with each attempt, I would get down to what seemed to be a set point for my body (around 230ish) would plateau for weeks/months at a time and would eventually get frustrated, give up and regain the weight.
I understand completely not wanting to sabotage your chance at surgery by losing weight but at the same time I feel that any weight you can lose beforehand will only make the surgery easier for you. Congrats on the loss.
