hmmmmm, when I found out I was approved I shouted it at the top of my lungs!
Perhaps you dont have to explain why you arent going to attend class next semester, suggest you need to take a semester off for personal reasons... if your grandma pushes, then you can discuss with her what you planning on doing.
As for your friends, bring it up casually, like... "Hey I was thinking about WLS, what do you think about it....?" Then you can say you have been doing alot of research, and are getting excited with the idea of doing it, etc...... Your friends are going to find out sooner than later, if they are true friends they will stick with you through anything.... if they arent you will find out soon enough. What you are doing is a VERY brave thing, your level of bravery scares those closest to you... they will support or falter.
Good luck darlin', no matter how you do it!

sierrab, mate just tell em ,try not worrying about what people think and say about "your " choices. People are funny and they will say no to this surgery ,because they love you and they are scared to lose you...yada yada yada and all the right reasons....The quicker you start to inform people the quicker you can start to build a nice support network for yourself Good luck mate

I was selective in who I told as I thought I knew how certain people would react.
Boy was I wrong!!! A couple of people that I didn't tell found out from a letter to the editor that I wrote and were completly supportive. I figured they wouldnt' be.
My best friend on the other hand, had pretty much stopped talking to me.

My friend got really wierd. She was overweight herself and once I announced to her I was thinking about having surgery, she started going to a dietician to lose weight the "proper" way. She lost 100lbs in about a year, but on an incredibly restrictive, irrational diet. She was only allowed to eat about 7 different kinds of foods. I was soooo happy for her, but i was concerened that as soon as she went off the diet the weight would come back on.
Sure enough, she went off it in May and has put back on about 40lbs.
I was really proud of how she lost her weight and supported her fully, it's just too bad she couldn't feel the same way about how I lost mine.

I didn't tell anyone until theday before surgery...but it was more about I didn't want to be bothered by all th questions and have any negative reactions.

I told very few
I have seen a few collegues in the past week and they noticed a difference - I said that I was working out every day, cut out all sugar and soda and really cut back on calories. All true. Most of them just said, well you look great!
I also am not going to be too forthcoming about how much weight I'm losing. When I had someone press me, I said, I don't know - over 20 I guess. It is 35 since I saw her, but she's just not who I want to share this with.
On the other hand, everyone at my gym knows (well, the staff does) because they are part of my support system and they know exactly how much weight I've lost too. I just choose carefully.
Good luck. And I would absolutely not tell someone I didn't feel like telling.
