Clear Liquids Day One
OK, so if the "liver shrinking diet" is (in theory) to make the odds of an open rny lower as oppossed to lap then I'm in trouble. But hey, who cares the truth of it is... I am so sick of all "my favorite foods that I'll never be able to eat again", that I am more than ready to get rid of them! ( Never thought I'd be saying that!)
But seriously, I am more than a little dissapointed with myself for not sticking to the "lsd". I should be doing everything in my power to make this surgery the best it can possibly be, and I have really started out on the wrong foot. ( I keep telling myself that if I was a "Willpower Queen" I wouldn't be here in the first place. So I have set my resolve to do absolutely perfect with the clear liquids. I have decided that if the goal of the "lsd" is do keep a deficit of carbs in your system so that your liver will metabolize the stored fat, that for the remaining two days before my surgery, I'll consume MINIMAL carbs and burn as many calories as possible. Sound feasable?

Christy -- Hang in there girl! My surgery is Monday. Your comments really made me think about my behavior over the last 2 weeks. I have been sticking to my hi pro/low carb "fairly well" but not 100%. I'm ashamed of myself, because as you say we need to be truly committed. I've slipped and ate 3 candy bars and a cookie last week at work. In the last two weeks I've acted like a mad woman and had at least a candy bar or cookie a day. There I've admitted it. I'm truly scared, I don't want to fail, and I thank God for the gift of this tool I'm about to receive. We can do this and we will succeed because we've been through a lot to get this far. There's no looking back now. Let's just keep up the faith in ourselves and our doctor. WE CAN DO IT! Take care and best wishes to you!

Christy & Vbee, you'll do great.
I was so sick of thinking of food and what to avoid and what to have...I had my favorite meal, Saturday for lunch, then went to clear liquids til my surgery on Tuesday. My doctor didn't recommend that I do it, I did it on my own, but he was pleased.

Christy, if your dr. told you to be on clear liquids two days before surgery, you better listen to him and do what he says. Remember, this is a VERY important phase and also remember that your stomach and intestines are being dissected (so to speak) and you don't want to have a lot of intestinal fluids that could possibly flow into your abdomen when your intestines are cut. I would think this is to ensure the most safety possible for your surgery. I'd think twice if I were you before breaking the clear liquid diet before surgery. If you are thinking about breaking it after surgery, don't worry..... You will probably only be on the clear liquid diet for the first week and you will not want to eat anything. First, you are just happy to get the liquids. Secondly, you will be so afraid of ripping something apart and hemorrhaging or leaking that you will not break it afterwards. Just be aware of the "head hunger" you will have. That's when you see someone eating or see a commercial and "THINK" you can eat that, but in all reality, you wouldn't know where to put it if you have it. lol So, just keep your health in mind. You can cause yourself some major complications from not following your food plan. Good luck with your surgery and keep your eye on the prize, as I try to do everyday, and you will do just fine! Vbee, good luck girl! You will do great!

There is no way to describe the changes
I remember feeling so panicy about the foods "I'll never eat again" but in hind sight, it was really a waste of time. The surgery dictates your actions, you won't miss anything THAT badly. And if you do slip up after surgery, you will be so MISERABLE (says she that ate a fortune cookie and threw up for two days) that you will NOT do it again. I am now way too busy to worry about foods I used to love. They just aren't sexy anymore - I really don't care. If someone told me I'll never eat again, I'd be like, "No biggie".
Now - for your own peace of mind...If the sugeon says no food after midnight the night before, you know if you don't do that, you could die. So, clear liquids for two days, maybe not die, but we are talking serious instructions here, no? This has nothing to do with food - it is about preparing to be cut up and stapled back together. You can, you will stick to - as if someone had a gun to your head.
Don't second guess yourself, don't doubt, KNOW that you are taking the first steps towards saving your life and you will not allow old silliness to get in your way. You have already made the decision to change your life - so here you go!
Good luck on your sugery and we'll be saving a seat for you on the bench!

YOU CAN DO THIS! IF NOT NOTHING ELSE, YOU CAN DO LIQUIDS FOR TWO DAYS! BELIEVE ME, they will turn you away or worse, have surgery with a huge scar that could have been avoided all due to your WILLPOWER! You can do THIS! (scar is not the issue, it is the healing time with a large incision!)

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! (And the tough things that I needed to hear) I have not considered cheating on the clear liquids, just belly-aching about it I guess! My will was certainly tested today. we had to go to a b'day party and hubby had to work. so i took the girls and we had a great time. but i must say, it was difficult to be surrounded by all that sugar. But i didn't even lick my fingers after serving my kids their cake. Praise the Lord!!

I'm glad that I'm not the only one feeling like this. Your post couldn't have come at a better time. I'm on the same "lsd" and I'm 10 days pre-op. I've slipped a few times only to nibble on a few naughty things. Actually I ate less than the recommended serving. I can't ever remember eating less than the serving says on the box/bag/can. These messages reminded me why there's a strict, dare I say it... DIET that must be followed prior to surgery. Thanks
