The place I went to goes up to 64, after that it is case by case. Go for it if you want it! Welcome to the board.

Default age and surgery

Good Morning,

I just wanted to tell you that i am having mine done at mayo clinic rochester,mn. and we attend group meetings before as part of the behavorial changes, and this last week we had a 75 year old woman come and and talk she was about 4 months out. She did have a couple of miner complications but now is doing wonderful, and wishes she would have done it sooner.
so i would say go for it.

There is no absolute cutoff in age. The idea is you need to have years to live to gain the health benefits from improved co morbidities to be worth the increased risk with the operation as the risk does get higher with advancing age. I think 60 is well within accepted guidelines and unless you are of outrageous medical risk, you are definitely a candidate. My advice is to find the most experienced surgeon you can.

I'm new too and concerned about my age...soon to be 60 as well and my current medical problems. I have chronic pain and have been on disability because of it for 12 years. I always had to struggle with my weight but when exercise became so much more limited by my foot & back problems I started gradually gaining. Each year added 8-12 lbs until now I weigh 260 lbs at 5 ft 7 . Both knee joints are shot and my back problem is approaching the need for a fusion (fusing the bones together).

I have lots less muscle mass now. I was wondering if you know any post op patients in their 60s who have done well? Do they lose weight slower?

Thanks for helping

Red face I was 56 at surgery 2 years ago!

I was 56 when I had my surgery, 2 years ago, last week!

I weighed 422 pounds and had MULTIPLE co-morbidities....
Dr. Callery's words to me, 2 weeks before surgery were, "Sandi, I don't know if you'll make it off the table....." my words to him were, "Dr. Callery, I don't know if I'll live through tomorrow....."
My words to my husband and my mother as they rolled me down the hall toward the OR that morning were... "....Let's Roll...."

I knew going in that it was either DO or DIE.... but, what kind of life was I experiencing at 422 pounds? I couldn't walk 10 feet without being out of breath, my body hurt so badly that I was in constant pain, I was on humongous amounts of meds including insulin 3 times a day, I was on 88 units of one of those, a heart condition, and a blood disorder that was discovered only 1 month prior to my surgery that caused me to be more suceptible to DVT..... amongst many others..

"Sandi, I don't know if you'll make it off the table..." the words still ring in my ears and they still bring tears to my eyes to this day... but, I'll never look back at those days again... I've lost 213 pounds, more than what I weigh and I can happily say that I no longer take ANY insulin, my heart condition is GONE, I still have the blood disorder, but, I was born with that, so were my sister and one brother who died of it a year before my surgery... we just didn't know we had it... until he passed away.... I've gone back to work after not being able to for over 5 years, I can move like I used to and I don't feel or look my 58 years, so I'm told! LOL
I'd do it all again in one single heartbeat.....
Yes, I have LOTS of skin remaining behind (literally) to remind me from whence I came, and I know that I have surgery yet ahead of me to remove at least some of it, I'm not worried about all of it, but, I'll go one step at a time when that time comes.......my 40 longs just gotta go!!
