Epidural.. I Am Freaking Out!
UGH.. I was just reading Gina's post about the epidural. Why did you have to have one if you are put under? UGHHHHHHHHHH Please tell me I do not have to have one if I am doing laparoscopically!! I know I probably sound like a baby, but when I say I had a bad epidural experience with my daughter, trust me... They scare the H-E double hockey sticks out of me! I will still of course go on with the surgery, but MANNNNNNNN I will be stress'n until then! ugh.. kkkkk.. I am cool. wink.. NOT.

I did not have one. Just your regular anesthesia.

Ooh Julee, I know what you mean about bad epidural experiences...when I had my son my epidural was so spotty! I can't imagine if it helped at all, and if it did, WOW it must hurt REALLY BAD! I think the epidural was something Gina arranged for special. Unless you've made other arrangements, you most likely will have general anesthesia.

I had the epidural for pain management after the surgery - believe me, I was gone for the surgery. But I had mine open and really wanted to avoid narcotics. I had a perfect epidural (I had two natural childbirths to avoid them previously) but that was totally my choice. I don't think most lap patients need anything that strong. So please - RELAX! No one is going to make you do anything and you are having your surgery lap so it isn't really applicable.
It did make my surgery experience- honestly. I never could have done all that walking without it. But again, Albany Medical is just the best place ever to have surgery.
So relax woman!!

Obviously we can't compare cause we have either one or the other, but my doc said the pain of the two are equal right after surgery. After the first few days is when the lap starts feeling better and healing quicker. My "bad time" was probably only 2-3 days.

I didn't have one either, no morphine either. In fact I had it lap and didn't need any pain meds, except upon first waking up. Not everyone is the way, I am telling you my experience in hopes of relieving your stress, and worry you are going to do fine.
Other than Gina I only know of one other that had an epidural, I don't think it is that common and his was a horizontal open, because of prior hernia operations.
You are going to do great!

I've had a few epidurals - and with my WLS, I chose to have a PCA pump (through an IV in my hand) rather than an epidural. I had 2 c-sections - had epi's with both of those and have had 4 knee surgeries - 2 epi's with those. I'll tell you - the epidurals for the knee surgeries were a TOTALLY different experience than the c-section epi's.
My Dr routinely uses epidurals with both LAP and OPEN WLS . . . but he gives you a choice of epidural or PCA pumps. I chose the PCA pump because I got fevers after the epidural was removed on all 4 of my experiences - twice I had to stay in the hospital an extra day . . . It's just the way my body reacts - so I chose the PCA . . . which was a DREAM!!
