Default Acid reducers

Okay so I'm on Prilosec 20mg for 6 months as a preventative measure, but the surgeon wrote me a prescription for Pantoprazole 40mg for 4 months because I keep waking up coughing with acid in my throat/nose.

Aren't these the same thing? The pharmacy gave me only 1 month instead of 4 of the pantoprazole until I double check with the surgeon if I'm supposed to take both, but I call the surgeons office and keep getting a busy signal... ALL DAY LONG. Ugh.

Anyone know if it's okay to take them both?

Jo - I don't think you're meant to take both. Both are proton pump inhibitors (long-lasting reduction of gastric acid production).

Hope you get through to your doctor soon.

"Pantoprazole" is the generic name for Protonix. I've been taking it since I had my stricture fixed and I have to be on it for a month. I wouldn't take both.

Hi Josephine,

Oh, i thought this was one of the meds. I took for when I had stomach ulcers many moons ago. I still suffer from a build up of acid in the stomach from time to time and I'm prescribed with Lansoprazole. They work really great for me. I know when you get the acid in the throat how awful that is, especially if it goes into to the nose and you get that burning sensation.

Do you have a medical help line over there where you could ask for some advice? I hope this clears up for you soon.

You are not to take both at the same time.

Pantoprazole (Brand Name Protonix) and Omeprazole (Brand Name Prilosec) are both proton pump inhibitors and work in the same way.

Pantoprazole is the stronger of the 2 medications. Your doc likely gave you the Pantoprazole since you have not had complete relief with the Prilosec.

I don't think you are meant to take both. Good luck getting a hold of the doctor to find out.

It will not hurt you to take both.
