Default My surgeons meal plan

Well, it finally came in the mail today. My surgeons meal plan. (Keep in mind that bread is a staple of the Dutch diet). I will try to translate this the best I can.

First 2 weeks:

Breakfast: 150ml (5 ozs) lowfat yogurt, cream of wheat, SF pudding or kwark (thick fruit flavored pudding). Cup of tea or coffee without sugar.
Snack: 5 ozs unsweetened applesauce or juice
Lunch: Cup of broth or 5 ozs lowfat yogurt, cream of wheat, SF pudding or kwark.
Snack: Cup of tea or coffee without sugar.
Dinner: 8ozs pureed meat/veggie/potatoes and 5 ozs lowfat yogurt, cream of wheat, SF pudding or kwark.
Snack: Cup of tea or coffee without sugar. Unsweetened applesauce or juice.

After 2 weeks, free to move on to any food item. Recommended plan is:

Cracker - Think Wasa
Beschuit - don't think there is a translation for this. it's a hard round thick whole wheat cracker that gets really soft if you add liquid to it, like yogurt.

Breakfast: 1 piece of cracker, toast, or beschuit with a thin layer of diet vitamin fortified butter and lowfat cheese and lean meat.
Snack: 1 cup of tea or coffee without sugar, may use sugar substitute or light creamer. 150ml 2% milk, buttermilk, or lowfat yogurt. A portion of fruit or fruit juice.
Lunch: 1 piece of cracker, toast, or beschuit with a thin layer of diet vitamin fortified butter and lowfat cheese and lean meat.
Snack: 1 cup of tea or coffee without sugar, may use sugar substitute or light creamer. 150ml 2% milk, buttermilk, or lowfat yogurt. A portion of fruit or fruit juice.
Dinner: 50g lean meat or fish (or an egg), small portion of vegetables, small portion of potatoes/rice/pasta.
Snack: 1 cup of tea or coffee without sugar, may use sugar substitute or light creamer. 150ml 2% milk, buttermilk, or lowfat yogurt.

*Total liquid consumption of milk, water, tea, coffee etc should equal at least 1.5-2 liters of fluid per day.

*Please chew each bite very well and work up slowly to adding raw vegetables back into your diet as they will cause discomfort.

* Be sure to take 3 multivitamins a day and try to avoid dumping syndrome by limiting the amount of sugars you take in. If you have the sleeve you will not have to worry about that, but may still experience discomfort from too much sugar, so it is not advised. Also, gastric sleeve patients only need 2 multivitamins in addition to the prescriptions you were sent home with.

This diet is so predictable. Basically the same thing I got from a dietician a few years ago when I went.

Very interesting Jo! I find it odd that they are recommending to drink liquid (coffee or tea) with your meals, instead of the standard 30 minute before/after rule. Is that a sleeve thing, or just a Dutch thing? It doesn't sound like much protein either....I guess they don't recommend protein shakes?

The Kwark sounds really yummy!

my thoughts are yikes!! that seems like alot of yogurt (not a huge fan of it) and alot of carbs....

maybe they are on to something...as most europeans are not overweight and that is how they eat regulary?

I think in Europe they recommend a lot more carbs, and just a lot more food, than they recommend in the US after WLS. I remember someone else here a while back that had gastric bypass in Belgium posting what her dietician told her to eat in a day, and it looked a lot like this. It was way more food than I could eat at a meal. And a lot of carbs.

This diet doesn't look like it contains that much protein, although I didn't add up the numbers. But especially for the first two weeks, it doesn't look like much at all. Did they tell you how much protein to eat per day, Josephine?

And I'm wondering about the drinking with meals, too. Is it OK to do that with the sleeve?

Kelly

OK, I'm bored, and I should be working but I don't feel like it. So I'm adding up your protein grams here.

So for the first two weeks:

Eight ounces of yogurt has about 14 grams of protein, so that would be what, about 9 grams in 5 ounces?

So if you had yogurt for breakfast and lunch you would get 18 grams of protein. This says you could have cream of wheat, but that would be less protein, of course.

Dinner says 8 ounces of meat/veggie/potato, so let's say you had 4 ounces of meat, and the other 4 ounces was veggie and potato. One ounce of meat has about 7 grams of protein, so that would be 28 grams. Plus 9 more if you had 5 ounces of yogurt, too. So 37 grams total. Can you eat that much at one time? 13 ounces of food?

Anyway, altogether that would be 55 grams of protein per day. How much do you need with the sleeve? Is it 60, like with RNY.

Then, the diet after the first two weeks:

If you have a slice of toast, a slice of meat, and a slice of cheese for breakfast, the amount of protein will vary a bit depending on the type of meat and cheese and how big the slice is. But a slice of turkey has about 9 grams of protein. And a slice of cheese has bout 7 grams. Toast not that much, but let's say it's 20 grams for breakfast.

Then you have the same thing for lunch. Another 20 grams.

Dinner is 50 grams of meat, which is only about 1.75 ounces (does that seem like not very much?) or one egg. One egg has about 6 grams of protein. 1.75 ounces of meat has about 13 grams of protein. The veggies and rice or potato won't have much protein in them. Let's call dinner 15 grams of protein.

That's 55 grams so far. But there are three snacks, which can be milk or yogurt. So I guess you would get enough.

Kelly

The drinking rule is 30/30. They have you drink a lot for your snacks, nothing for your meal. Kelly, I'm glad you added up the protein stuff, because I hadn't done that and they don't tell how much protein to eat. Glad it looks about right.

Yes this is a typical Dutch diet, only a normal person would eat twice as much as this.

I had my RNY done in belgium and my meal plan looks very similar. I was very confused when I first recieved it because it was so different to what everyone else on TT was describing.
It is true though, you rarely see any overweight people in germany or holland where I live right on the border.
Im 5 and a half months out but dont really follow the plan they gave me because personally I feel its too much carbs. I might have a slice of wholemeal bread maybe 2 or3 times a week with herb Quark or cheese and occasionally some boiled potatoes. I dont really eat pasta, rice or crackers on a regular basis, but if it is what we are having, I will eat a little. I do eat fruit everyday though which was on my plan.
I know I can eat a lot more in volume than those who have had a RNY in the U.S. I was told this is because in belgium they make your pouch bigger. I dont know why but it doesnt seem to have made any difference to the speed of my weightloss compared to the average, if there is such a thing!

Usually I would eat:

Breakfast : fat free sugar free fruit yogurt or some museli or 1 slice wholemeal bread with marmite/cheese/herb quark. at the weekend I will have poached or scrambled egg with turkey bacon and tomatoes.

Snack: 2 pieces of peeled fruit (apples, pears, plums, few grapes)

Lunch: tuna with low fat salad cream, or chicken or ham, with sliced tomatoes and cucumber maybe some cheese.

Snack: steak, lamb, chicken, pork fillet, white fish or stew or bolognaise with portion of mixed vegetables ocasionally a few boiled potatoes and gravy.

I drink tea or water, I cant handle fruit juice though.

I buy most of my food from Albert Heinj in holland because I think their food is freshest and they have a large range of different fresh fruits and vegetables.

Do you think you will follow the plan they gave you to the letter or will you adapt it to what you think is best? Hope you are doing well

It's hard to tell if I'll follow their plan or not. Just thinking about food makes me want to throw up. Hope I'll actually move into a phase where I like food and want to eat something, but right now I just want the icky feeling in my tummy gone.

They all eat like this and they're thin and healthy, so I think it's a good plan, I just don't wanna think about it right now
