Default VSG-Best Decision I Ever Made

Hi All,
I had VSG surgery on 10/20/08. I am feeling the best I have in a long long time. I am thankful this surgery was an option available to me. After a long battle with insurance and losing, I had to fund a surgery for myself. My doctor offered the vsg at the same price he did for lap-band. After careful consideration I went with vsg because I did not want to keep paying out of pocket as I would have with fills if I went with the band. I am very pleased with my results and I have a wonderful surgeon to thank. I would do it again in a heart beat! To date, I have lost 39 pounds. I know without surgery, I would have not been able to achieve this on my own in less then 8 weeks no matter what I tried. My knees were so bad that I was almost in a wheelchair or at least felt like I should have been. I am bone-on-bone on the inner part of both knees. Since losing the weight, I am able to walk farther and they do not lockup as much. I get out more with my family and feel like I have my life back. I wish good luck to anyone that is looking in to have a vsg surgery!

Default VSG - am presently pre op...

...but soon.

Q: How long before you could eat solid foods? I have a meeting to attend in Feb, and want to be on solids so as not to be noticeable while at dinner.

Q: How long before travel?

BTW - Love Spokane. Flew my first float plane in http://www.coeurdalene.org/index.asp?PageId=343
- not far away.

I was on protein drinks, soups and so on for 4 weeks. Slowly I added foods and I can tolorate most except for breaded and floured foods. Which is a good thing! I have not traveled yet but at 6 weeks post op once you get a feel of what you can eat I think would be fine.

Default Getting sick with VSG

Now with RnY there is this thing called "dumping" where you get physically sick if you eat the wrong foods. But with VSG are there foods you just cant eat? I know the volume is restricted because of the small stomach, but no dumping, right? Any nausea problems?

And what controls the empyting of your stomach? Is it just time? Or what you eat? Protien goes away slower, I know. Carbs faster.

How many times a day do you eat? I have a problem eating between meals because of so many meetings. Bad form to eat in front of investors or customers. I just eat out too much. Portions too big - full of fat, sugar and salt.

I'm meeting with the nutritionist on Thursday Dec 18, and will get more info then. Psych tomorrow evening.

You are correct, with the vsg there is no dumping. You do have to eat slow and chew thoroughly. I can not tolerate breads or real heavy foods. I mainly stick to proteins. Yes, again you are correct, the proteins do keep you feeling full longer. My doctor suggests waiting about an hour after you eat before drinking. I do sip water during my meals. I eat 2-3 times a day, the rest of the day I drink 4-5 protein drinks usually 4 oz each. Good luck with all your doctor appointments!

There are too many surgeons who do it, that is for sure. But it is really a great procedure. This is an old thread BTW. I had my surgery on 31 Dec 08, and am now down 52 lbs.

Look under Personal Stories/Aviators Log Book for my story from Pre-op until today. It is worth a read.

Thanks, Aviator. You are my first official contact with anyone and it is comforting connecting with someone who has gone through the process, whether VSG or RNY or LB. I wish I could find someone locally who does VSG but I guess I have to let that go. I'm in Raleigh, NC.

Why did you choose VSG over RNY or LB?

Congrats on all the weight you have lost. 52 lbs since Dec is unbelievable!
best-

ps. I was a baby pilot once-got as far as my solos but never got through to license,; who knows what the slim future will bring?!

Rather than repeat it, here is the link to my blog:

Aviator's Log Book

It deals with so many issues that I was concerned about Pre-Op, and takes you through my surgery and up to now. I hope you find it funny, informative and entertaining. BTW - I am in Bahrain right now, and have to go to bed.

Welcome to TT. I will send you a friend request if that is OK...
