Mixing Liquids and Solids?
I know people say they wait 1/2 before eating after drinking. But, I also read about people going out for a meal and having soup and then chicken, fish etc.
Does the time rule still apply between the soup (liquid) and the Meal???
Just Planning ahead.
Thanx all!

If it's a hearty soup then I guess you could treat it as a solid rather than a liquid.
I can't speak for lapband people but with all the RNY people I've eaten with over the past couple of years, I can't remember one who had soup AND an entree.
Early out, they've chosen some protein from the appetizer menu with some steamed vegetables or salad. Or they've gone straight for an entree (mostly meat or fish and a few veg).
I regularly go for a hearty soup and a small salad or fresh fruit. Even at 2 years out, I don't know that I'd want to go soup and an entree - that would be too much.
Question for you - do you have the same restrictions as RNY'ers? I'd find it pretty difficult to eat a whole cup of food in one sitting.

All depends on where you're at.....I find soups pretty filling and won't be able to eat much of an entree. I can barely tolerate a sip of anything after a meal and definitely have to wait 20-30 minutes or barf!
I can do 1/2 cup of a light soup, like miso or other broth based, and then eat a few bites of sushi. I stay away from creamy soup...just too much butter and cream in those.

Hi Jynx! (really just wanted to say that... ). Yes there is sushi in your future, in moderation. and no, don't mix liquids and solids. Liquids help wash the food down so that you can take in more. You don't want to take it more. You want to be able to feel full so just solids, in small quantities, and let yourself feel full. Don't drink with meals. As for soup before an entree, depending on the density of the soup, you treat it as a liquid or a solid. It sounds like a lot to be considering taking in in one meal, though.

if the soup is thin enough, and there's time between soup and meal, a lapbander can have the soup first easily. depends on how tight you are hon

my doctor actually recommends not eating the broth and the stock at the same time.. he says drink broth first then eat stock- then waiting the hour as he suggests

I could/have eaten a thin soup (like wonton) before a meal. It's like any liquid; if it's thin it will go right through your band. Just think of it like a funnel; if the food is blocking the funnel first then the liquid will sit ontop and push the food through, but if you have the soup first it will go through. I rarely have soup anymore as even a hearty soup slides through faster than a solid.
